I went to my second stepcousin's baby shower yesterday and I'm not that close with my dad's side of the family so I wasn't very comfortable around everyone. In Filipino tradition you're supposed to kiss your elders on both cheeks, so I had to greet and say goodbye to about 30 people that way. Plus, the whole time I was there I didn't really know anyone so I spent the time following my mum around. It was quite awkward to say the least.

So many events happen daily, it's hard to recount just one event....

When i'm talking to my classmates, they always tell jokes and laugh hysterically. I find myself not only never laughing, but also having a hard time reading their social cues. I can usually only handle about an hour of hanging out with them before I want to be left alone.

I genuinely like being alone, I don't necessarily dislike people. However, I tend to get worn out in social situations because I'm constantly trying to analyze if i'm missing any cues.

Well, I'm just sitting here, disassembling clothing tags from my clothes, because I can't stand the feeling of them.

Yesterday, a couple that my parents had been friends with since college visited us, and they all decided to go to this brewery nearby, and leave me with the kids: a fifteen year-old son, and his ten and six year-old sisters. The whole situation was kinda scary for me, since I was going to be the only adult in the house for a few hours (my brother was at work), and I'm not very good with kids. Lucky for me, all we did was watch Modern Family on our DVR, and the fifteen year-old kept his sisters in check. To be honest, I'm kinda glad that they listen to him. If it weren't for him, I'm pretty sure leaving a nineteen year-old Aspie with a ten and six year-old, who probably know nothing about Asperger's, would spell disaster. Or, their mom would have had to stay with me.

Today, during English, we were taking our finals and I finished mine a tad early. I asked the teacher where the stapler was and she told me to wait until the end of class and then she told the whole class, "Okay, class, if you finish early, then just sit on your papers until everyone is finished!"

I took what she said literally and got confused at first. Even when I realized that she wasn't being literal, I put the papers on my chair and sat on them until the end of class.

I caught myself flapping my left hand today. I don't know if I've ever flapped before. 8O

Suffering through wretched noises of construction right outside my window and it was so much worse than nails on a chalkboard

The first time that I ever noticed myself flapping was Saturday. I had a bad meltdown all by myself...just me and the dogs and I realized that I was flapping with one hand, and thought...I'm not going to stop since no one is here and it is somewhat calming to do.

Sitting in the sushi bar today with my best friend she hadnt finished eating, I had and I was kind of bored, so i picked up the packaging of the chopsticks i was using and tried to break it in half. I streatched it and streatched it and pulled it accross my head... completely oblivious to my surroundings... and the look on my friends face, she had to stop me just so she wouldnt choke on her food. I was embarressed when i realised what i was doing was socially unexceptable.... but i was having fun...

A yellow biplane flew over our back yard and the farmer's field behind us last week, apparently practicing maneuvers. It flew very low. I could see the pilot through the window of the plane every time the plane went past the house. It was really neat the first time. It was still kinda neat the second and third times. After that, I began to feel increasingly desperate for it to stop. Still, it went around and around and around. I'm not sure who was more uptight about it - me or the dog.

I hide a lot of my moments, even when I'm alone. I guess it's just the training of my upbringing, making it so scary to behave in a way that might be socially unacceptable that I don't dare do things like run around the house shrieking because of a plane flying overhead. I sure felt like I wanted to, though. Funny how I don't worry about being like other people in other ways. I really do clearly have a mind of my own. Somehow, though, this has been different.

I dunno if this is ASD or ADD but I have seen these sort of stories from NT partners who talk about their aspie partners not doing stuff for them when they say they will or when they ask them to:

Yesterday, my husband told me to make him a sandwich and he only wanted ham on it, nothing else. I was doing the dishes so I was going to make him one after I was through. I finish them and then go back to what I was doing before. Then right before I am leaving for work, my husband comes out and he goes to the kitchen and I see he has made himself that sandwich. I forgot all about making him it. I do these things quite often and I need to be reminded. I tell my husband to remind me after ten minutes if he doesn't get his whatever he wanted me to do because I tend to forget.

This is an ASD thing? I do this too.

Caught myself with a social faux pas.

I walked into a coffee shop and the barista who I see all the time asked me my name. My friend whom I met there had just said it.
I thought the barista was just joking, so I said - "you just heard him say it." (pointing to my friend.)

He looked at me like I said something rude. "No, I don't know your name. Seriously. what's your name?"

Oh. "Esther"

Oh. Ok.

Totally mistook him there. Shows my inability to really get what the heck people really mean.

I've read people with AS often have this "ability". My colleagues are usually surprised when I can remember similar work-related strings, lol.

Ah yes, I do this sort of thing, too. I also play something of an "association" game with it--for example, if I see the string "HWY" as part of a license plate number, I'll associate it with "highway."

As for today's ASD moment... I have a Lego brick calendar at my desk--it's this one, in case you're wondering:

http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Brick-Calendar-853195

Anyway, I was staring off into space for a moment when I noticed that the numerals on the blocks were not all aligned properly--they were aligned higher on some of the bricks, and lower on others. Now I can't help but notice the misaligned numerals every time I look at it.

Also, this evening, I had a mini-meltdown.
