Generally I was only saying that being unable to trust others precludes you from all interactions that require said trust.

Its a self-limiting and usually ultimately self-destructive behavior.

Its basically a statement branching off the old "If a tree falls in the forest and noone is there to hear it does it make a sound?" question. In this case it would be more of a matter of "If you can never take the risk when an opportunity presents itself did the opportunity really ever exist?". For all intents and purposes it doesnt.

Hmm.. protecting yourself emotionally is probably another part I dont get very well.

No one can predict the future no one can know they are being decieved before it is revealed.

So how can you really protect yourself? And isnt the act of trying to protect yourself by holding things back more of an obstacle to a relationship than anything beneficial?

Wouldnt holding back be a form of lieing of your own?

No it really means being honest and not accepting whatever is said to you as the truth if you know someone is addicted and not in a recreational way. A whole other page could be filled how to be in a relationship with someone who is in addiction - but part of that is to not pretend anymore that what they say is for real, to understand how not to be brought into their manipulations. It is pie in the sky thoughts to pretend that things are going to be different if they are still drinking or using heroin or whatever.

But still thinking someone may be lieing because you have evidence is quite different than believing someone may be lieing simply because they are speaking.

the person who originally brought the topic up, never mentioned suspecting it. the liar was outted.

so they KNEW they were lying. no one ever said anythiing about believing someone was lying because they were simply speaking.

Im not sure what your talking about but all Im saying is that to distrust people by default is to suspect them of lieing before they even speak and therefore more destructive and disrespectful than trusting them until they prove it was a mistake.

Thats how I see things. Ill believe everything a person says until I have evidence Ive been lied to then and only then will I start doubting them.

Call me gullible or idealistic if you like but the rewards have far outweighed the risks. Ive had people give me the shirt off their back and risk their lives to help me because I believed in and trusted them when no one else would.

People cant trust in and care about someone who doesnt trust them.

just to digress a bit, I find it easier to "connect" with members with a pronouncable name.

For example to me, dgd1788 you are just a number on the net, but "Tequila" or "Canyonwind" to pick a couple of names at random, I can visualise as people.

I would have trouble with IP addresses. Or am I misunderstanding you meaning the IP address = user name?

No he means just have it listed at the bottem of our posts. Again I could get a new IP
address everytime I login in if I wanted to with my ISP (AT&T)if I wanted to. I have had my IP resolve to New York city sometimes and I'm in a small hicktown with as many cows as people.

Why would we want to identify people by their IP address. (I'm not even sure I have one, anyway -- what is that?)

In answer to the very first question that sparked this debate, I have different names on other forums, but only one for each.

Yeah you have an IP address. It maybe static or dynamic but you have one. Its the only way to route information to you computer. Looks something like x.x.x.x
where x can be 0 to 255(I think) You might beable to type this in your web browser and see your IP http:://192.168.0.1

The admin Alex can view everyones IP and he alone is best suited to decide
what to do with it.

Technically I have a Sock Puppet on another message board, but I have a good reason for doing so. Basically what happened was that I was a perfectly fine user who helped everybody out and was well meaning, and under the username KBABZ (of course). Unfortunately, I didn't know about censor by-passes, and has inadvertently used them in a couple of my posts. So much so, that I was banned. However, one user (who is also a WP member, but he never posts), who I had made friends with on this board, offered an old e-mail, so now I'm back under another name and helping people out again. It's actually kinda like being a superhero or something, you have to pretend you don't know all these events, and so you have to 'articulate' whatever you're saying to suit. What makes it feel like being a superhero is that I'm classed as a 'good guy', and I relate more specifically to Batman (he on the run from the cops, yet he does good; I have to avoid getting caught by the Mods, yet I do good as well).

Hope you guys don't get the wrong impression on this, because I seriously don't want to ruin another experience online with a lot of people.

I use KBABZ as a posting name EVERYWHERE. If you see the name KBABZ anywhere on the net, chances are it's me! :)

For the betrayal argument, the reason why people don't like being betrayed by these people is just that: they were betrayed. You founded all this trust, this information, onto somebody who wasn't really who he or she said they were. Yes, you can argue the fact that, if you enjoyed yourself, where's the harm, but you founded this trust on an image that someone presented, and so when that image is taken away to reveal something completely different and is something you don't like, it can totally suck. As an example, who's the person you care about the most? Okay, now imagine if they said they weren't who they said they were, and everything was just an act. Yes, you've had all these good times with that person, but they had a fake personality and very likely weren't sharing these good times. Sucks, eh?

Kbaz, I can understand what you did... I mean there are different reasons people create sock puppets and different reasons for using them. One (decent reason IMO) would be to circumvent an admin who has banned without legitimate reason; another (also legitimate IMO) would be a protective move, to hide one's identity, if you have been harrassed or stalked. But then there are people who deliberately do it to deceive and mess with people, or to obtain self-agrandizement by making it look like these other "people" are agreeing with them and supporting them... the latter as far as I'm concerned IS criminal.

I only post under this name.

But I can see legitimate reasons beyond sockpuppetry to have more than one account:

1. Many people I know who are plural create several accounts for the obvious reasons.

2. Some people might have secrets they want to talk about, but not to link to their main handle, and they might have legitimate privacy concerns, so they might create another account just to talk about those particular issues.

3. Having totally forgotten what your previous account was (this has happened to me in some other places).

I think someone accused me of being the same person as him when I was trying to get him to calm down once. If your reference is to the person I am thinking of. I only have one identity. Even if I were to have an alter-ego I wouldn't let him or her watch Fox News or vote Republican ;-)

An undetermined period of time ago, KBABZ was a well-meaning user with a bright future. One dark and stormy night, a moderator ended his online life...FOREVER!

Some time later, with the help of forbidden arts, KBABZ was resurrected. However, he had taken on a new form. Realizing these changes made it impossible to return to his old life, he decided that KBABZ was no more. That night, he forged a new identity, one that would assist him in his primary mission. Thus, KBABZ died, and the world witnessed the birth of...

Yes, I agree with you on these. I was given no warning, no prior notification, not a single mention of it. I just came home one Friday afternoon (yes, I remember the day) and I found that I was banned. It hit me hard, and I spent a lot of the next few days being on my own and doing what I call "Smoldering over one's own thoughts and experiences". Not to mention I spent the next week or so constantly checking back and having multiple users go "Where the heck is KBABZ?". I even watched as they said they may form a virtual petition to bring me back (it was the most bitter-sweet day of my life). However, I was able to tell one user I knew via PM, and he explained the situation. In the end though, I only found out the cause over a month later, and from a partner site at that!

As for the other reason, if it's for Ban-dodges that trolls and flamers do, then yes, it is something to take care of. A recent debatable example is Kadizihea (spelling?), because as far as I could tell, he didn't do that much wrong (but then again, I only know that certain alias, I have no idea what he did using his other profiles).

Oh, and you nearly got an award for spelling my username right. Try again!

scrulie wrote:

Well, yes and no. Imagine you met someone online who says that they like the colour red, lives in a decent house out of town in Britain, has two kids, and, just for you sake, likes squirrels. Then, imagine , after a month of getting to know them (ignoring circumstances that could make it go otherwise), that they told you the truth. The truth is that they like the colour blue, live in a crappy flat outside of New York, has been divorced from his ex-girlfriend who's looking after her two kids, and he hurts animals for fun. That's an exaggerated version of the feeling we're trying to convey here. Or at least, it's an attempt to.

werbert wrote:

Yup, that's just how I felt! Like a superhero!
Oh, and werbert gets 4 awards for spelling my name right.
