pain is involved but it's not about hurting someone else beyond what they have consented to... the consent is equivalent to hurting yourself by proxy.
saying BDSM is about pain is a little like saying riding a bike is about rubber because the tyres are made of rubber and you need them to ride a bike. Some people who are into BDSM like to dress up as babies and get bottle fed for instance.
if someone where to say for instance "Ow! You're hurting me!" as given in the usage of hurt they'd probably want to stop the BDSM session.
you certainly don't intend to cause injury or harm, damage, wound (except in a very minor way), offend or detriment them.
