Oh I see that the DSM-5 has been officially approved, that's why there are these No More Asperger threads here.

Because I don't think simplyfying works in this case. There ARE differences between "normal" autism and Asperger's and I don't see how erasing that would help anyone.

The french "asperges" means "asparagus".
In Dutch the word is "asperge" meaning "asparagus".
I am visually thinking and reading "Asperger" I see "asparagus".

Asperger was falsely accredited with his findings anway.

There was actually a soviet scientist who discovered the syndrome before he did, but was never accredited due to the war and the iron curtain.

they aren't erasing it, just changing the terminology, most with AS would be on the high functioning end of the autism scale.....they are still going to have different catagories but based on severity rather then petty things like people with AS not wanting to be associated with those who are lower functioning out of embarrassment.

They're not simplifying anything. They've added more to the criteria, and done so in a logical and consistent manner. One of the additions is a dimensional rating for severity - not the best, but an improvement.

As for the differences between autism and Asperger's, I think a lot of that tends to be cognitive bias. Most diagnosed with AS meet the criteria for autism.

It's not like that. Classical autism is going to disappear, too. They'll be rolled into a single "autism spectrum disorder" diagnosis.

So referring to the change in criteria as "no more Asperger's" is like you're making a cake and claiming that this is the end of the milk, eggs, sugar, and flour.

Some Moron just waved a wand & POOF we are all different...of course, the DSM re-write isn't out until May of next year.

In all honesty there's no difference between there being a sub-label for AS within the spectrum.

Whenever a bureaucrat looks at your paperwork all they see is 'autism' label and thats it.

Insurance, government, employers... that is all they see. That is why I decided never to get an official diagnosis. Closes too many doors because of a silly label.

I actually claimed government hiring preference based on my diagnosis, and it worked. I am going to the FTC/SEC when I finish school (won't say which). So no, I don't think disclosing to employers is always a bad thing. Insurance can't deny you for a preexisting condition under Obamacare. And private employers can't see your medical records unless you show them to them. So I don't think there's really any drawback in getting a diagnosis, unless you want to work for the State Department or the Department of Justice or something similar (even the military will allow you to enlist).

When I heard this news, I immediately thought it was good since I have a diagnosis that's different than a lot of people here. I don't have Asperger's Syndrome, and it's sometimes very difficult to explain that to otherwise well-meaning people. However, I'm deeply concerned that this might end up making autism into a sort of 'fad condition' as some people have feared. As it would suddenly seem like more people are diagnosed with it, there's bound to be laymen who would say something to the effect of 'those people must be faking for the privileges.' I've sadly seen this happen to friends who have different non-autism diagnoses that have become more common over the years.

I wanted to ask a question about what Tyri0n was saying if that's all right. I was under the impression that people with any sort of autism diagnosis were no longer deemed fit for active military service in the United States. I remember a story a while back in the Oregonian about someone who enlisted and they claimed that the recruiter concealed their disability. If I remember the story, the individual's parents felt their kid was acting against their wishes.

They might as well just say this! Yeah the vid doesnt really make sense but for some reason I feel like playing old school video games!

Thank you! That is the best song I have ever heard. Here is the full version, in case anybody is looking for it:

It is from an 80s game called Monty on the Run, in case nobody guessed it from the blatantly obvious game cover on the video.
Great now time for me to play monty on the run! http://www.vizzed.com/play/monty-on-the ... 27247-game

More labels. Bad ones.
