Aspies leaving WP due to percieved "tone"

some of the complaints here remind me of those people who state on their dating profiles that they "don't want drama". have you ever noticed that such people always seem to generate their own drama, more so than your average people? or like the people who complain that 99% of the world is mean to them, which is statistically impossible - they are actually being mean to everyone they meet.
WrongPlanet is a mixture of positive and negative. it's effectively neutral. but if you bring the negativity with you into threads, that's what you are going to see, everywhere you go. the people who tend to be positive and supportive, or at least neutral, are not complaining about the tone of the site. they are off spreading sunshine and happiness (or at least quiet support) in the forum, which some people are just not noticing under their clouds of gloom.
you want negativity? you will find it.
you want positivity? you will find it.
you expect curebies? they are everywhere.
you expect autism pride? it is everywhere.
for those people that complain of negativity, the best way to change that is to check your own attitude and make a shift, because i am willing to bet that any member could trawl through your posts and see the very same negativity that you are complaining about!
the fact is, we are not neutral machines that filter experiences with any measure of objectivity. we look at posts and threads through the filter of our own expectations and experiences and moods. WrongPlanet is a different animal to each of us, and each of us change it a little bit when we interact with it.

Well said!

This thread that you have posted on in the Politics, Philosophy and Religion forum is very relevant to this discussion though:-

I'd say there were pretty serious mitigating factors. I doubt anyone but the most constantly and terminally offended would seriously take offence at that clip, because a) it's such a commonly well-known part of popular culture and b) it is pretty unambiguously taking the piss out of and mocking that kind of character. Oh, and the series got a 'PG' in the UK in the notoriously censorial climate of the mid-1980s for its first home video release, so it's hardly considered vicious.
You're suffering from a sense of humour failure I think (much like the BBC) and/or slavishly sticking to rules without using your judgement. If the context was different, I'd agree with it being taken down.
Would it also be against the rules to expose anti-gay people or racists by posting clips of their bigoted rantings? I take it that I can't post clips of Hamas people speaking any more, for example?
Declension: The Daily Mail are against censoring that particular clip because it's part and parcel of one of the most successful comedy shows of all time. I don't know if they'd query nudity being censored on Carry On films, though they should, to be honest with you. (British television is becoming increasingly puritanical on the subject of quite harmless nudity and humour.)

Some people don't realize that getting up from said computer screen and going places when you're noticibly different than everyone else, doesn't necessarily fix your life either, in fact it may even make it slightly worse for some. Some of us know this because of the experience of doing so.
It's not simply a way of life or a lifestyle choice, it's just who we are.
A little venting and complaining is okay, but it's not going to solve any long-term problems. You have to be ambitious and approach life with fortitude.

I never said I felt sorry for myself and my self esteem is just fine, you just assume those things because of whatever stereotype that you're thinking of (couch potato in mom's basement perhaps?). I accepted that I was different a long time ago and I don't bother with society because I know the reactions I will get, just like every other time.

I don't think you should be lecturing anyone on this site as to what they should and shouldn't do. We are not all like you, nor do we want to be.
No one says we aren't approaching life with fortitude - we are and you patronising us with this 'snap out of it' attitude is not helping anyone. Not everyone is ambitious ether - I'm not and there's nothing wrong with it either.
Go and run your marathon or do your bungee jump and get off peoples' backs! That would be my advice to you!
(Your forum name is very apt by the way)

Don't worry - there's evidently two clearly delineated types of people on this forum and I'd rather be in your camp believe me!

The reasons why I rarely post are:
* The often negative tone here
* The imbalance of power (pro-cure vs. anti-cure)
* Pointless and repetitive threads
* The widespread discrimination against the self-diagnosed (FYI, I am diagnosed)
The main reason, however, is that much of what is posted here offends me a lot, you know, like being told that I'm a "disease" or "illness" which needs to be " cured", etc. If I try to defend myself against this, I am almost always flamed. I reckon I have many haters here.
I also can't stand the attitudes towards the repercussions of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. For example, a member here was horribly discriminated against, and posted it here. The member was exceptionally calm about it, and didn't even post it in The Haven. Meanwhile, I was ready to explode. Some insensitive as*hole posted something like "get over it" to the OP. WTF?!
I have also been flamed for being angry about the discrimination we face. Yeah ... Sure ... Let's just accept it as part of daily life.
In a nutshell, WP has a negative effect on my emotions, and I'd probably be banned for defending myself against those who hate me. As such, I no longer feel motivated to post.

You are right their is an imbalance in the cure vs anti-cure, but the anti-cure the ones with the majority, and FYI I am sure the owner of this site is anti-cure. I get attacked when ever I express my views that we are damaged, defective, or ill. These are my opinions, if you don't like it, then ignore it.

But there is no 'cure' anyway so how can you be pro-cure?

Have you factored in the fact that everyone has freedom of choice as to how they deal with life?

I answered no, but I don't know if my vote really counts because I don't know anyone who has AS/autism.
I've been using WP for about 3 and 1/2 months now. Until I recently saw some threads complaining about negativity etc on WP, such an idea (WP's negativity) had never even crossed my mind. I thought everything was fine. I guess different people have different perspectives.
I really enjoy WP because it's completely different from my real life - work etc. WP is rather refreshing to me. So, it's a bit sad that some people perceive negativity in WP.
I admit, though, that I often feel I am rather left out even on WP. Not as badly as in my real life, where I'm very isolated. But it still doesn't make me perceive WP negatively.

you may want to upload an avatar of something that interests you. you have kind of a simple and neutral username that members might skim past, but an avatar would make you stand out a bit more. it's a bit of a trick to help you get noticed.
