Stan and Ollie were Laurel and Hardy, a comedy team whose heyday was the 30s. The FFL DID take them.

People often joke that people who "disappear" have "joined the French Foreign Legion."

To mention the "French Foreign Legion" is a dead giveaway that the person is joking.

Oh, I was unaware of this as I have never heard of people joking about that until now. The more you know I guess. In fact, I hadn't even heard of the French Foreign Legion until recently.

The FFL has been described as "the U.S. Marine Corps without the sensitivity". Tougher than tough.

Formed in the Nineteenth Century so that France could garrison its colonies in the Sahara it took any male from any country including fugitives and undesireables. And it probably would take even....the likes of Stan and Ollie!

BTW: there really is a "Rif" tribe in North Africa that was known for fighting the French Foreign Legion. That's the reference in the name of the movie's fictional enemy "Riff Raff" tribe.

Ah right. Well, you certainly seem to know a lot about this stuff.

Only what everyone of my generation knows about the topic. Just bringing you up to speed.

(the thing about the Rif tribe is a bit arcane, but not so much so that Hollywood didn't make a joke about it in a 30's comedy movie).
