Just because i dont see your point does not mean you don't have one.
You talk of flies and doors; being rigid and crying.
Maybe autistic people should stop banging their heads against the wall and open the door. Maybe 'they' should have the correct mindset, then they would be 'cured'.
Is this what you are saying?

I can't tell if there are 'fakers' on this site or not by reading posts, I would have to meet everyone on WP to determine this. Can you imagine how long that would take? Not to mention how much a venture like that would cost me?????

However, there may be people on this site that are looking for a group of people to fit in with. For example, kids getting a hard time at school can relate to us, as it's not just aspies that get picked on you know. Maybe these people just want someone to talk to, find solice and comfort in us, and do you know what? I have no problem with that whatsoever. I don't understand those that fake it though, what a waste of their lives trying to live as someone they are not, but then hey, that's their life.

And (quick change of subject) Kosmonaut (yay, another Manc person), you don't happen to watch Meerkat Manor do you? Your avatar looks familiar to one of the meerkats off it.

So if you can tell from writing if someone is faking, then will you tell me how you do it? I want this skill, too. It would be kind of fun, like a secret code. But then again, I am kind of weird... :)

Diagnosis doesn't really mean anything, not accusing you of being fake though. I don't know you well enough to know. But, diagnosis doesn't mean someone is real or fake, counselors will exagerate the hell out of "symptoms" just to slap a label on someone so that they can sell them pills. So alot of fake aspies are getting diagnosed now. But this is how counselors and pharmecuetical companies make a fortune.

The flaw in this theory is that there are many better DXes for perscribing meds.Someone with a co-morbid that may react to meds...depression,ADHD,Anxiety...dont need an AS dx.You cant medicate AS,even the experts would have to agree with that,as chemicals dont change brain wiring, only help some people deal with Co-morbids that MAY because by living with AS synsitivities or overloads, social anxity.Point being, there is only one benefit in them DXing someone with AS and that is if they are trying to get long term clients to "counsel" and they happen to specialize in this and needed more clients.(I have considered this possibility with the guy who DXed me,because he seemed to want me to continue "therepy"....no thanks)However, there seem to be more people interested in getting DX then there are specialist who can do....they dont seem to need clients,as they are booked months in advance. So,I have to question the primis as not being very logical to me.

I have not read the whole thread, when I do so, if it is long I have a tendency not to post.

But I had some thoughts so I stopped reading and decided to tap them out.

Yes first I will say I absolutely believe peeps fake AS. I can only imagine it would be done to get attention and yes, to feel special.

I further would imagine these may be mostly younger folks and that they tell anyone within ear shot they have AS, they would have to do this in order to get the attention.

In any case, it also then could be used as an excuse for "abnormal behaviors" they may posess.

But I do not get that because I myself tell no one. After my diagnosis I did not tell anyone for the longest time. It is not something people are going to exactly befriend or look up to you for.

I did eventually tell my mate as my relationship was suffering badly on and off though the years due to my "obsessions"/behaviors/withdrawing from social situations etc etc etc. It was difficult because (A.) I'm not the type of person to draw attention to myself, especially possible negative attention... and (B.) an explanation only seemed like the right thing to do when I had the answer... finally (C.) perhaps if things were better understood on thier side it would not be such a rough road for either of us.

In any case I finally said at a dinner out "If I could tell you why I am the way I am, would you want to know even know it could not be changed?". And so it was done.

I even have trouble discussing some of my AS related issues on this board, such as the lack of empathy, it seems so cold... and I am not a bad or uncaring person but it can feel like it way when I type out my experiances in that area.

And I do not like to say I am inept... that I can not socialize normally or that I have trouble looking people in the eyes when talking to them.

On and on, these are things that are not easy for me to talk about.

That is what I don't get, why would someone choose to say things that are painful to say about oneself if they were not thier reality? Truth, I have probably deleted more of my posts here than left them for others to read.

I understand the attention getting stuff, and that one can push hard to the "special" side look at me sh*t... but why AS?

I would think they would be a lot other other groups one would prefer to belong to.

Do not get me wrong, I am not sorry I have AS and I am actually fairly content when left to my own world and not pushed. But as far as wanting to tell other peeps or NTs, most of those types of people are more likely to think you are weird than special.

I do not know, it just seems like an illogical choice to me.

Close. I dont see 'cure' as a goal. I see functional, but that doesnt mean perfect, nor carbon copy. It simply means that you find peace in and around yourself, and a place in society. I dont see AS as being anything wrong.

I see the adoptation of victimhood as being more of a hobble than AS itself. I have sensory issues(touch, light, sound), and when I was a kid, I freaked out over them. I Hit people. If I had been 15-20 years younger, some well meaning individual would have diagnosed me as an aspie, and taught me to use that as an excuse for anti-social behavior. Instead, I grit my teeth and I bear it.

I got picked on and bullied too. My very tormentor turned up years later in the bar I worked at. The tide had changed, and he had become meek and I the strong one. I could have made his life a living hell, but I didnt.

He never did apologise, and though I found out the reason why he was such a jerk(he went through hell just before that time), I never demanded any satisfaction. I assumed that he was contrite, and as he has been exceedingly polite and kind ever since, what good would it be to play the victim, or to make him one?

Now he sees me, smiles, shakes my hand and asks how I am doing. If I wanted to play victim, I'd call him two faced, but the truth of the matter is that we have made peace.

I'm in ramble mode today. Waay off topic, waaaay off point. Sorry.

I still would like to understand how someone can tell if your aspie by how a person writes. Is it like verbal/nonverbal clues in groups. I so don't get those. If I work in one group for a long time; people tend to pick on me.

I don't like being aspie; i'm self diagnosed - although I know I could get a real diagnosis...but, it's scary to think I could get labled in a system.

However, knowing why I do what I do makes so much sense now. Ever watch the movie "mozart and the whale"...I'm the guy. I'm always trying to fit in...I can freak people out. I always thought I could make myself normal; if I just learned. Wrong...I've finally accpeted that I'm me; but, boy it took a lot of crying. People will never want to hang out with me....I'm so sad over that one.

Yeah. In fact, if AS were to become a fad, besides being dumbfounded at the stupidity of it, Id think that was pretty cool and a step in the right direction from previous fads.

Here are the top 82 persons who posts most often and who claim to have aspergers.
(note I rejected 18 names from top 100 who did not claim to have aspergers)
So my question to the orignal posters how many of these 82 likely do not have aspergers? You should have alot of data to read :)

WOW, only about 8% of the top 100 posters are undiagnosed! One thing is for sure! If we don't have AS, we can have TOO much of a negative impact. HEY, we COULD have lied! Somehow my profile got set to diagnosed, and I could have left it there.

Maybe we should judge things based on value to the cause. Some seem like trouble makers, claim like everyone has AS, complain about AS being 100% bad, imply it is just a bad social ability, etc... Others seem supportive, positive, understanding, and try to keep it in a good light, etc... I think most of MY posts are in that second group. I only wish I knew about this sooner, etc... Do you realize that AS became a diagnosable condition about 14 years after I graduated highschool! The only time I saw a psychiatrist/psychologist was when I was 6(about 25 years before it was a diagnosis)! So it is understandable why I didn't get diagnosed.

Steve

SteveK, you sound about the same age as me then. I was probably around 24-25 when the DX was added to the books.

Why would someone faking having a condition that people get ostracized for?

Way to go Benway! I can't wait to hear more from you!

I think anybody who wants to be AS is more than welcome to it. It's not like we get a prize or anything.

That would be soo cool. I can just imagine no-one trying to look me in the eye. Everyone off doing there own things. I hope it happens.

In the interest of fairness - I'm listed as being diagnosed. I'm not. I've had some trouble with the buttons recently, and probably screwed something up. I am pretty damned certain that I have it though - either that or something which seems damned close. I don't think that I've been faking since the late 60's.

EDIT: button fixed - for now. But the fact that it is easy to claim a diagnosis accidentally does call into question how many of those listed are in error like mine was.
