Anytime someone says "Half past" or "a quarter past" ect. when talking about time, I cant read clocks that aren't digital so when people or teachers get upset when i ask what time it is makes me upset.

The majority of short forms and internet fads that people say annoy me to no end. I don't know why, they just do.

I get frustrated when people say this or something similar because it sometimes feels like invalidation.

I also get a little irritated when people say "perception is reality".

I've never heard this one 8O People really say this?! What on earth is it even supposed to mean, that they lost contact with reality?

This is THE WORST one:

(After a breakup) Don't worry, you will meet someone else.

I love how NT's have NO f*****g IDEA how difficult it is for those with Asperger's to make relationships. They act like its like going to the convenient store to pick up something and it really pisses me the f**k off.

It's not like there is a store where you can buy Aspie-adaptable relationships.

The expression does NOT mean: "how you perceive the world is 'reality'". Obviously appearances can be deceiving.

What it means is that "perception - of you- by other people- is [for all practical intents and purposes] reality".
The practical social reality that you have to live in.

Other folks may get dumb and inaccurate ideas about you -but those notions are their reality- and thats what you have to deal with (so its part of your reality too).So you have to be aware of how you come off to others.

In other words: expect folks to treat you by how they perceive you, not by how you may really be. In short we all need a little PR to sell ourselves. Life aint fair, but thats how life is. So adapt.

Dr Phil rightly uses that expression all of the time to sternly coach guests on his show. If you watch his show you can pick up the layers of meaning from the context. Its a useful admonition- especially for aspies.

"I'm sorry you feel that way."

Thank you, that's really helpful as I obviously took it too literally. I actually thought it implied that their own perceptions trump "objective" reality.

I don't watch Dr.Phil but I'm fully aware of what you describe and to a certain extent have learned along the years to manipulate people perceptions to make my life easier, especially at work. It only works in superficial relationships, establishing any kind of meaningful connection with people heavily driven by perception is impossible for me.

I do fine now, but I remember trying to understand how "To Mama" was an insult back in the 70s. I asked my friends to explain and they tried, but since it really doesn't make sense, they couldn't. That's when I learned that sometimes you just accept the general definition even though it doesn't make sense.

The other night I caught myself pointing out to a girl I know that saying "I'm a ride or die b***h" doesn't have a damn thing to do with being loyal, which is how people mean it, it just sounds like a female version of "Live to ride and ride to live" and makes me assume her boyfriend rides a motorcycle. The words have nothing to do with the meaning when strung together.

But I let that go too. Although I did make her see my point first. It did backfire. She thought it sounded much better since it has a biker cachet

Never heard either of those expressions. Have heard "yo mama", but not "to mama". Never heard anyone of either gender uttering a sentence containing the phrase "ride or die". Must be a regional thing.

I'm typing with my thumbs on a phone with a small screen. It's YO Mama. The " to" was a typo I didn't catch.

Ride or die is fairly new. Maybe a few months. Popular with the younger set.

My parents always say "Who's in the bathroom?" when they really mean "Is anyone in the bathroom?". We should really get a lock for the bathroom door. >.<
