I tried adding these spammers to the foes list on my profile, but nothing has changed at all. All of their posts are still visible so that feature seems completely useless. And what do they mean by their posts will not be fully visible? Why not just hide their posts completely?

I also think a limit on posts by new members should be done, as these spambots just clog the GAD forum most of the time with their sewage. Right now, this forum has the worst spam problem I've seen in a long time, when compared to other forums I post on.

There are a few medical forums I frequent...

New members can not post for 72 hours. You do have access to all the form.
New members have a limited amount of posts/day for one month. Members are topped off by so many new posts/hr. It's a big amount, like 10/hr.

When I see spammer trash flood a forum it usually means the owner does not care anymore. The above set up is NOT hard do do, and has been around since early 2000s.

Alex, you are losing your street cred when I have to go back to page 5 to see new posts, because some halfwit is getting his rocks off spamming your site.

Get it together or sell the site and get your cash out of it. Watching wrongplanet die a slow death is sad.

I have to agree. At a point in the near future, the weeds will overtake the flowers regardless of best intentions. It is a certainty unless something to succeed at rectifying this problem is created and used with vigilance.

It's awful to refer people to this site, when I get a WTH email because the person has to scroll back to page 8 to get relevant posts because the first 7 are spammer BS.

Usenet died the same long, slow death. Groups would peter out. "Moderators" stopped culling the spam. In not much time, a really good group would be full of porn and conspiracy theory spam.

I've made some changes to the code and have implemented some spam filtering that should effectively stop the SPAM. If any slips through, I will be able to adjust things so that it will stop completely.

The constant spamming has made me lose interest here and it's the same stuff anyway I have already posted. I have been busy anyway with life.

I do agree there should be a lot more moderators here. They would be the ones to remove spam.

Is it possible to just limit a number of posts newbies can make when they first join here? Like they can only make five posts in a day for a week? Or would they just keep opening new accounts to make as many posts as they can to get around that block?

Or just do it the other way as someone suggested, have a admin or mod approve the account first or approve all their posts first but also have more moderators.

It was indeed getting very bad, but it seems that Alex has now made some changes that really are blocking the spam rather effectively.

I would like to convey a very big "thank you" to Alex for doing this!! !!

I must be doing something different than the rest of you. I lurked at WP for a couple of years before signing up. Took that long for me to be comfortable with the idea. Now I've been a member for a long time. In all that time, I've only had two or three contacts that were inappropriate, that is, they were trying to sell me contact with "honeys", or other sales pitches. I don't see that as a problem. I just deleted them without contacting them, & in one case where they kept recontacting me, I reported them. Problem solved. Except for those few unwanted contacts, I have not had any other people problems at WP.

Are you responding to these unwanted contacts? If so, you are just encouraging them. Don't ever respond to them, just delete them, and in the case of repeated contacts by any of them, report them. Also, if it's someone who knows you, just block them from contacting you.

You are never under any obligation to respond to unwanted online contacts. I don't even answer my Tracfone if I don't recognize the number. I have one incoming ring for people I know, and another ring for calls from unknown sources. I made that ring an annoying one, so I would know right away that it was probably a spam call. I'm thinking of adding a third ring for calls from business and medical contacts. Right now some of the medical numbers aren't logged into my contact list, so I occasionally miss those calls unless I see the number, and can guess from the A-code & exchange number that it may be from one of my doctor offices. I have a lot of health issues, so I have a lot of doc offices to deal with.

Just remember, if you don't want to respond to a contact, DON'T!! ! :D

Nothing to do with what we're talking about on this thread.

I know what you're talking about. Totally separate issue.

I got one of those come ons from a stranger in my Wrong Planet message box claiming to wanna date me years ago. "Hello honey". Just ignored them. LONG time ago.

But we all are not talking about spam in your pm box. We're talking about all of that open stuff that was cluttering up the public discussion forums (especially "General Autism").. Those Ashikaran Indian voodoo astrologer ads. How could you possibly avoid seeing them?

Noone, from any religions, anywhere, claiming to have magical superpowers, needs me or my money, btw. He should possibly be spamming some voodoo doll, idol, devil, or deity, instead. Some huggable tree or ascended livestock.

You can't fix Vashikaran romance nor can you eliminate Voodoo love spells, they are perfect and eternal.

As Alex stated he implemented code to stop the spammer and should be an easy fix if he found an exploit
