I find this contradicting
Some people are naturally gifted at practical things.
Some people like me are disabled out of a lot of practical things.
For most people including those extremes, we can learn to be better. Not as good as the people who are gifted or more gifted than us naturally (at least not in extremes), but for eg I can boil pasta and I couldn't when I was in my early 20s. I can tie my shoes, I couldn't as a 9 yo.
School made that harder for me cos there was a time pressure to it.
Tbh I don't know my IQ, it varies from genius to idiot (their words). But I don't think making me be ashamed of things like reading a lot/studying a lot is helpful - and it wasn't just school kids that did that, I had that in the workplace as well when I was in my 20s.
I wish schools were quicker at kicking bullies out of classrooms cos people like me end up not going to school if we're afraid to not go. It shouldn't be the victim who is absent, it should be the bully.

^ What saddens me is that the brunt of the bullying I received happened 45-50 years ago, and yet I'm not sure much has changed.

I'd have to agree that not much has changed----but it is changing, albeit way too slowly.
What a person could do as an individual----is to quicken the pace of change to his/her own advantage. By contradicting the naysayers by letting them know that you are worthy of consideration.
I don't feel people should go by "prevailing currents." They should seek to create their own "current."

I knew it was removed from the DSM-5 years ago but didn't realise it was also now taken out of the new ICD. Just looked and yeah it as taken out last year. Seems a shame imo.
ICD was used in Europe so you could still get a diagnoses of Aspergers (as I did in 2016) if the professional chose to use it.

My brother has recently been diagnosed with Asperger's, so I think they're still using it in the UK. But I think he has BAP really. Very borderline, and has never had trouble fitting in and making friends. His only problem is being prone to depression.

Like the empathy s**t. Loads of Aspies here think NTs have 100% empathy in any given situation and Aspies have 0% empathy for others.
There could be a whole thread discussing agreeably to how most NTs feel empathy for those that have experienced the same as them as not so much for those that haven't, but then another thread pops up with the OP whining about how they only can feel empathy for those that have experienced the same as them and everyone agrees like "oh yes, autistics can only feel empathy for others experiencing the same as us".
Empathy this, empathy that, I wish the blessed word did not exist.

I really don't know why I'm autistic.
When people told me it, they told me it in terms of personality traits. Introversion, pedantry, preferring books to people etc.
As an adult, I've read my statement from school and it seems just like my report except that instead of framing things as 'model student' it framed things as 'patient'.
So for eg 'loves to read books and is forever collecting new information well beyond her years' became 'obsesses over books and minute details'.
I fit the stereotypes I was given which describe why I'm autistic. But they describe a personality. And not necessarily a bad one, either. More a neutral one depending on if you want to be a social butterfly or an introverted intellectual.
Personality is not neurological. You can change your personality if you want to. You cannot change your Autism just because you want to.
Personality types can't be changed either, imo. People are naturally how they are. I can change parts of my autism by being within the right environment.
I think the problem is that aspies are lumped together with autistics. And those of us who are borderline aspie are lumped in with severely asperger's people.
I think we are completely misunderstanding each other
We don't have the same definition of terms.
For example, what are severely Asperger's people? What does that even mean?

Some advocates are so delusional they seriously want autism removed from the DSM to spare their ego because they don`t want to be associated with a disability.
They don`t understand that to unlock any help including support, care & financial welfare autism needs to remain officially a disability.
Idiots the lot of them ![]()

According to the DWP I'm regarded as 'severely disabled'. If I said I'm just 'different' and got taken off disability benefits I'd end up knee deep in crap.

Could you get it on autism alone?
I couldn't.
I needed to have a breakdown over mental illness in order to get it and it's all based around anxiety that I have ESA.

Types who would be considered Asperger's by an amateur within their own social class/culture/age group. People who struggle to fit in.
I fit in unless I'm out of those places (ie with a higher or lower social class person to myself or someone vastly different in age like teenager or old people) or with particularly chatty types, usually women or camp men who want to do nothing but gossip.
It's all very borderline with me, whether I am or not, mum managed to get me pushed through for a diagnosis simply due to the fact that I have 1 sensory issues and 2 difficulty within giant secondary school environments and she couldn't get me into the smaller sized school.

I feel like a lot of the kids that bullied me had given up in life. As teenagers. It was psychological same as yours. But for boys it was all very physical.
They didn't have proper ambitions etc.
Whereas my granddad went to secondary modern school & did all right for himself cos he was put onto a trade. He focused in school on his future.

By forgetting it's a spectrum, you do Autism Speaks' work for them.
They want a cure too.
Can't fix what isn't broken.

I have been under mental health services since late 1973. The majority of the time with a dx within the 'psychosis spectrum'.
