West Asian as in Iranian? I am not very familiar with Iranian women

two kinds- very traditional [Mohammedans from the countryside ] and modern [from the city, oh so cosmopolitan and worldly]. both are tough for most americans to get close to.

There are Bahais from Iran who are very friendly but they try to convert you.

there are a LOT of bahais in canada. all of them are very highly educated professional types.

Yes I've met plenty in Australia but all men, Never met a Bahai woman.

Unrelated to the current discussion, but ... I met my wife on a language exchange forum.

We got each other's Skype addresses and started giving lessons to each other. She looked great and had a great personality but all her behaviour towards me exclaimed "friendzone!" so I didn't make any advances. Then just in passing she talked a bit about her ex-boyfriend and I realized she was single, so ... no shame in trying, right? I told her I'd started to develop feelings for her, she reacted positively and we "sealed the deal" a few months later when we could first meet in person. Back then online dating was still quite rare, but I guess for us Aspies it can be easier to manage at least initially.

My wife is a bit on the crazy side though (in a good way).

She used to be a bit scared of flying and on the airplane to Rome for our honeymoon she said "If the plane crashes now at least we'll die together. How romantic!"

Been 12 years together now and counting, hopefully I don't have to die too soon.

"West Asian" means.... 'from the western part....of Asia'.

Japan is far east ...even by far eastern standards. Its an island chain off of the..EAST coast of Asia. So Japanese is obviously not "west Asian".

=====

Okay...THIS is how to conceptualize it. Its decided from the point of view of Europe, and ancient Europe from before America was discovered.

"West Asia" is the same part of the world as "the Middle East". Which means the same thing as "the near east". West Asian (or Middle Eastern) means Iranian, Arab, Israeli, Turkish, Armenian, and like that. Folks from the western end of Asia -the part that is closest to Europe.

"South Asia" means "the subcontinent of India". Folks from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Ceylon, would be "South Asian".

Then there is part of Asia farthest from Europe.

People with the classic "oriental look". Fold eyes, high cheekbones, etc, are found in East Asia. Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Mongolian, Thai, Vietnamese. They are all "East Asian", and are known for having "the distinctive East Asian look".

To recap West Asia equals middle Eastern. South equals Asian Indian. And East Asian is folks who look Chinese to westerners who are from China or from places near China like Vietnam or Japan.

So you would be "half European, and half East Asian".

Western Asia is the most confusing geographically. It's most associated with the region of ancient Persia, Bactria and Afghanistan. All of these groups speak Indo-Iranian. The Turks in ancient time were restricted to central and east Asia, Arabs to the middle east and the Armenians and Kurds were in Anatolia.

To the Greeks and Romans the nearest Asians were the Persians so they were most commonly associated with west Asian.

Not exactly. Lydians, and other non Greek peoples in Turkey were the closest. And they were called "Asian".

The Greeks coined the word "Asia". And it grew in meaning over the centuries.

In the Days of Homer "Asia" just meant the flyspeck sized piece of land that contained the city of Troy in the northwest corner of Turkey. Then it came to mean all of what we now call "Turkey". Then it came to mean "the Whole world east of the Aegean (ie "east of Greece"). Turkey became "Asia Minor", and the rest of Asia was "Asia major".

Its not that the Iranian Persians were particularly "close" to Greece. Its that the Persians conquered a vast empire that ruled the entire civilized world known to the Greeks- except for Greece itself (including Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, what is now Turkey, etc, that was east of Greece. So the Persian Empire became synonymous with "Asia".
