That's decibel, Don Quixote.

And you'd be so generous as to outlaw "anything else over 10 dB". That's equivalent to the noise level of normal human breathing. The sound of leaves rustling is 10 times louder than you would allow. No kidding.

Actually I knew it was. But as I now give myself a lot of leeway in becoming the UNperfectionist anal-retentive personality that once claimed my psyche, I decided to let that and other instances slide. Helps me become a better person and a really lax speller. Oh no. What will the Spelling Police do once they're out of business?

LOL

Thanks for reminding me though.

jjstar,

To confuse the issue I am agreeing with you. In studies of places where people lived long and active lives, and were happy, everything was looked at. The only factor that was common to all, was a very low noise level. The noise level of a whole village equaled one refrigerator. Without a sound barrior to overcome, children played, dogs barked, in a near whisper.

Noise is killing us. When the power goes out my whole body relaxes, drops a tension load, like a backpack, and when the lights come on, it comes back. Many modern ills, Cancer for one, were rare before electricty.

I have ear plugs too, but ears in my gut also. The bike is my trip up a cow trail into the mountains, where I park it and walk. A night of sleeping in a cave does wonders for me.

Lawnmowers can be silent and propane, or electric, and there is no excuse for leaf blowers, my personal hate. All vehicles should conform to running clean and quite. A lot of places took air quality grant money and bought junkers, and scrapped them, get it off the road. I have no problem with sound level checkpoints, and it would help to have a car crusher and just smash them to scrap. A Law with shreadder teeth.

If you like loud music, you should like wireless headphones. I am not oppressed by ipods.

One man's freedom ends where another man's begins.

Here, when pollution control came in, 1972, some classes of small engines were exempted, because there was no way to make them clean, it is something like under 200cc, 35 years later it has not changed.

2-Cycle should be banned, and chips to control ignition are freely available and cheap. Mufflers do not rob horsepower. My tractor came with a glasspack, and a deep thunder, I replaced it with a small car muffler, and all you can hear are the valves ticking.

Taking the loud out of Harleys will mostly affect teens and 1% ers, and anyone who alters it should have their License, Registration, and Title revoked. The litttle bikes are exploiting the exempt class, they are the main problem, dirty, loud, whiney, as if made to annoy. Which does appeal to the teen market.

I have designed a small personal transport. I looked up all of the laws, and was shocked. in my class, 12 horsepower, I have to use DOT approved tail light lenses, tires, and have a rear view mirror. The engine is totally exempt.

Noise levels are regulated, a motor vehicle must make less noise than a log truck, one size fits all.

What is legal to import and sell under national law, is very hard for states to regulate. We do not have a lobby effort, industry does. So it goes on.

I do not think the annoying teen, who cannot vote, or the 1% er, (Convicted Felon) should have a say, but the vast majority of riders would agree with you.

It is a social parenting issue, some things are not allowed.

Problem is, 545 people run this country, and they each get over a million a year in "campaign donations."

$545,000,000 is pocket change to industry. A single tax law can be worth billions.

They play us against each other, and and are laughing at us.

That's good to hear. I think we all have to bring our strengths to the Think Tank of How We'd Like This World To Be Looking Like...and share solutions. The problems have been identified, awareness is there. Solutions are floating around, some being implemented, some still being worked out. Some effective, some not. I think anytime you work in tandem with nature and its laws, you cannot fail. Actually it's what I believe to be true having seen it succeed time after time after time. With this particular issue of noise, the laws of boundaries apply, i.e. it is literally tresspassing of one's personal space. So, the logical consequence in this situation would be to uphold the law in all respects. For this special courts need to be established. Needless to say that in conjunction education on boundaries - establishing, respecting and maintaining needs to be made a priority of the first degree - right along if not preceeding mathematics, history and biology, because it all begins with safety. If a person isn't safe within their own home, where can they be safe? Caves, nothwithstanding of course....

And the small matter of you outlawing any sound louder than human breathing? Or are we skipping over that as well?

OK son, your 5 minutes are up.

BTW that's TUBA - not TOOBA genius. Please fix your profile. Tsk tsk. Next time I need a human spell-check I'll remember to look you up.

Thanks for playing Pot Kettle Black.

If by "adios" you mean that you're done in this thread, great.

Don't let the disparaging tone continue.

When I was a kid, I saw an ad in a comic book for kerosene-powered ramjets for bicycles. I thought the idea was cool at the time, but I knew my folks would never allow it. I doubt that the things were legit, but the idea is still interesting to me. :D

I sent you a PM, jjstar.

The thread may have to be closed if the content continues to veer in the direction of personal attacks. Let's keep it on topic, because there's some good and interesting input here as well.

The very worst thing about Motorcycles are those damn showoffs. I remember driving home one time on Interstate 95 southbound in Providence just before RI Hospital and I could see a guy on his motorcycle on the freeway ahead of me. The jerk decided to do a wheelie on the interstate and was riding on 1 wheel for about a 1/4 mile on the interstate. I was utterly horrified seeing that. Thought to myself it would serve him right to have him pulled over by a cop and have his bike confiscated. Seriously that's exactly how I felt. :x

Years ago back in 1985, I was in Los Angeles. Some guy on a motorcycle was weaving in traffic and had just gotten onto the Hollywood Freeway about a 1/2 mile ahead of me. All of a sudden traffic started backing up as I got onto the entrance ramp of the Hollywood Freeway. I found out way about 5 minutes later when I saw that same guy in the breakdown lane laying on the pavement covered in blood with the motorcycle laying on top of him.

Nope. No way would I ever consider a motorcycle.

This is risk taking - and it's probably one removed from suicide - it's also known as a death wish. So - what can be done? Ban all tv shows that promote Jackass-like behavivor? Fear Factor? Evil Kneival shows? There are influencers and those that are influenced - so why make the influence self-destruction via tv *programs*? Who said it has to be this way?

What's WORSE Than Motorcycles?

I can think of several things,

*Bird Flu
*Animal abuse
*Internet connection failures
*Living in poverty
*Living forever

Plenty more but don't think I should continue my list.

I agree with most of you, that motorcycles are noisey...but I have to say...extremely fun to ride :) Once your riding, it's like your in another world...great feeling.
Besides, if you have a decent helmet it should block out some of the noise.

I don't own one apart from a little 50cc pocket bike
I have been pillion on several though, so much fun!

Not for everyone else it doesn't.

Sorry, pet hate  . I wouldn't mind people enjoying themselves on motorbikes or scooters apart from this. I admire the minimalism, but...

It only takes one motorbike to fill a whole valley or a whole village with ugly, penetrating noise. Scooters are the fly in the ointment of Mediterranean culture.

SORRY, That wasn't Vee saying that, it was me. Vee was reading the forum and didn't sign off and I didn't notice I was logged on under her name.

I still love bikes though and cars suck. :D
