I like checking Bill Maher or Jon Stewart occasionally
or buy sometimes Le Monde diplomatique or more often Le Canard enchaîné with it's witty writingstyle in contrast with the ordinairy newspaper with its boring standard jokish wordings.

Traven, if you watched the news regularly, you would know that checking Jon Stewart is a thing of the past. He gave up his slot.

Watching the news is practically all I do.

Rolling news all day every day. I hate being out of the news loop.

I occasionally punctuate my news watching with Seinfeld dvds or watching certain tv programmes that I like.

For anyone who's interested in views on the world economy which you won't find in the mainstream media, and which would not be endorsed by our governments and Central Banks, you might check out Market Oracle, run by a very smart guy called Nadeem Walayat, who is based in Sheffield, UK.

Then there's Zerohedge, based in the USA.

From time to time I watch FOX for specific topics, but mostly I watch local news channels and listen to local talk radio.

Just over a year ago I decided to sample some American 'Talk Radio' stuff via the internet, and listened quite a few times to a station based in San Diego and one in Texas. It was nearly all virtually non-stop neo-conservative propaganda as far as foreign policy went, and neo-liberal on economics. Is this typical of local Talk Radio in the US?

No but I sometimes watched The Daily Show & the Colbert Report before they left.

I'm not sure what "neo-liberal on economics" means, but yes, there really isn't too much fair and balanced Talk Radio. I can't stand the stuff.

Of course I am not including some of the educational PBS type shows where there may be an expert or an author, and people calling in to talk to them, but without ranting by the moderator. (e.g., Science Friday, or To the Best of our Knowledge). Technically that's talk radio, but it's a different thing altogether and not what you are referring to.

I used to be a news junkie but they repeat the local news at 5 and 6. So instead of watching 1 hour of news. I watch the first 10 minutes to see who had died and where and the weather at 18 past the hour. I think listening to local news sucks the intelligence out of me.
I also listen to NPR but I only prefer the music section. Also BBC if I am in the mood. They are a lot better than US news.

I don't tend to watch the news on TV but I do keep up with current affairs by reading news websites including the BBC and RTE, the Irish equivalent of the BBC. I find watching the news very boring and slow.

Maybe the term's not widely used in the US, but despite the name, it refers to a right-wing brand of 'free market' economics whereby even the smallest level of state ownership, intervention or regulation is opposed, frequently being denounced as 'socialist' or even 'Marxist'.

Yes, most talk radio in the United States is right-wing. Most of the AM news/talk stations air shows like Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, etc. All of them are right-wing conservative. Progressive talk is very uncommon on AM radio nowadays, but there used to be several different progressive talk stations under the Air America name many years ago.
