In relation to the empathy debate: I have begun to suspect that maybe it's NTs that lack empathy for Aspies, not the other way round.

I have the same suspicion. Because I am oriented towards problem-solving rather than the healy-feely aspects of emotional support, NTs accuse me of not caring.

But when I point out that I've discovered the cause of the trauma and removed it, thus eliminating any future trauma from that cause, NTs tell me that I should have been paying more attention to the victim. When I point out that if the cause had not been eliminated, their victim would become a victim again, they tell me that I am insensitive to the needs of others.

So let me get this straight ... instead of fixing the electric stove so that the owner does not get another electric shock, I should have held the owner's hand and told her that everything is going to be alright.

Right.

Got it.

Electrocution is preferable to tears.

I hope you don't mind, but I will have to steal this.

Seriously though, I'd like to point out that there aren't any widely held stereotypes of Aspies. The condition isn't well known enough to have spawned any, at least among the general populace.

The fact that its not well known breeds stereotypes.

Here's a few common myths.

1.) We are not sociable and we are inherently uncaple of social relationships. Sure it is difficult, but not impossible.
2.) We want to be neurotypical, but don't know how. Not true, I for one see all the racism, all the sexism, all the social status games being played in the NT world. Do I want to devotte my precious energy to these stupid games? No
3.) We are selfish, not true, this is a generalization.
4.) We are unaware of the situation. Oh, most of us are quite aware of the stimuli and the circumstances. We have to be, we are hypersensitive to the situation.
5. Autism organizations help us advocate for ourselves. Let's dismantle this atomic bomb right now. Autism organizations argue from the neurotypical perception of disease to be cured.

That we have no sense of personal space.
- If anything I think most of us probably have an elevated sense of personal space. I know I get uncomfortable even sitting at the same desk as someone else.

myths/stereotypes that I've noticed

All aspies are maths/science geeks - I'm not I'm more like your typical "art student", not geeky at all
All aspies don't use sarcasm/metaphors - My, most of what I say is sarcastic/metaphorical
All aspies have NO empathy - bull, I often feel strong empathy for people I just don't show it
All aspies can't drive - OK true for me as I'm not old enough I have to wait til 17, but I'm still going to learn
All aspies are selfish - OK I am a bit. but not that much!

HOLY MOLEY this is my 666th post

Aspies lack empathy to such an extent that they could kill their own mother and not be affected.

Seriously, someone I talked to thought that and was very surprised when I corrected him. The things some people will think, honestly.

Not strictly AS, but people with forms of autism are like Rain Man.

To quote someone in my Business class "autism makes you good at maths but you cry when you see red cars and stuff"

Why won't anyone admit to having a lack of empathy? If you find yourself disagreeing with everyone, not caring about anyone, failing to understand other POVs, you lack empathy!

When I was younger (under 15) I really did have a almost total lack of empathy. I started to develop more in latter life through my own efforts.

Many 'normal' people also have issues with empathy so I don't think it is an exclusive Aspergers or autistic personality attribute but it is one facet used as a diagnostic indicator for many personality disorders and other conditions.

I've always had this sort of logical empathy... I figured out a logical theory of mind, too. More correct to say that our sense of empathy may be different rather than absent.

Anybody ever got hit with the "oh, do you memorize train schedules?" stereotype?
