40. I am extremely visual and emotional. I didn't get how spontaneous imagination relates to alexithmia, it sounds more like ADHD.

I’m always learning new things about myself from this site. Turns out I have zero spontaneous imagination. I always feel a bit weird that I can be so different than other people and be totally unaware. I guess that’s one of the good things about an official diagnosis. They examine all of these parts of you and give you a report. Although maybe learning about it all at once is harder. Who knows?

I have however done many creative things throughout my life: dance, drawing, wood carving, sewing rave and circus costumes. My ideas don’t just come to me though. I have to decide to start a project, sit with the materials, decide what I want to make and direct my thoughts. I wonder if this explains why I sometimes come up with convoluted solutions to some problems.

As far as links to alexithymia I would say that my lack of imagination definitely affects my ability to understand other people’s responses, motivations, etc. I do understand my own emotions pretty well these days but I had to be taught how by a boyfriend who was very in touch with his own emotions and had excellent communication skills. I didn’t even know that I’d been experiencing anxiety my whole life until I read a poster at university. The poster was recruiting participants for a social anxiety treatment/research project. It listed the symptoms and I had all of them.
