Everyone I make any attempt to socialize with ends up pissing me off in some way or another. If someone is so good at socializing that they can tolerate me despite my usual irritable seeming mood, then more power to them. But I'm not going to feel any obligation to return any social queues.

Yes - I guess it's because I have no family support at all. Besides, it comes in handy when you're unemployed and looking for a job. I think it's called 'networking.'

I don't come here SPECIFICALLY to socialize; allow me to explain:

Remember folks, you guys found out about your AS far earlier in your lives than I did...and because of that I still don't know which of my traits are common for Aspies and which aren't.

I come here to learn more about myself, and understand why I do what I do, and see if anyone can relate.

In most cases, you can .

I also seem to be able to provide some inspiration to those who feel down on their luck, and don't know how to cope with their AS...as I've managed to use it to my advantage.

That's why I come here.

Socialization? Eh, whatever....

I used to think it was important to go out amongst throngs of people and be a "social butterfly," sometimes, because I had this baseless feeling I was missing out on something. But then I became disillusioned with the baseless feeling when I realized I didn't enjoy this demanding activity and doing it just made me stressed out and tired.

Also, forcing myself into overly active social situations usually ends up reinforcing the "arm's length" limitation and naivete I tend to have with others, which can be depressing for me to observe.

Posting here sometimes is a nice balance of reaching out to the world from a comfort zone, where I get to share my opinions and use the word "I" a lot.

I'd like to be able to do it, but on my own terms. I see the sort of friendship I want and wish I knew how to get it and keep it on a consistent basis. It's very easy to see where I've gone wrong, but much less so to see where things have gone right for me.

Unfortunately, most of the "help" other people have tried to give me vis a vis socializing is comparable to someone trying to teach someone how to play the tuba when they really wanted to learn the violin. I suppose I have to figure out my own way of doing things.

That's a good way of putting it, it's been like that for me too.

No. I'm happiest when I'm by myself or talking to Internet friends. I have only a handful of real-life friends who I genuinely like to socialize with, but even with them, I'd rather e-mail them than hang out with them in person. This is why my AS hasn't interfered with my life as much as it has with others- I never have been bothered by not having friends. I'm my own best friend.

I only want/ feel the need to socialize when I feel that its worthwhile and I'm getting something out of it. Like going on a date, being with just a couple of friends, and accually doing something. Not hanging out just to hang out and "party".
