Ok, I have posted the poll on general discussion. It's called, "Survey about a WrongPlanet Gathering". The ball is rolling.

Now, if we get a large amount of people on here willing to go through with this, we need to get the moderators/founder interested in this too.

Why don't the Europeans ever organize meet-ups? It's not hard at all to travel, with the trains. A central place like Austria would be so hard to reach? We could stay at some out-of-the-way bed and breakfast in the country that cost really little, have walks in the valleys and evenings around a table in quiet pubs. I really don't understand why not. I guess there are too few Europeans here, that's why.

Greentea---I guess you have to survey the Europeans in here. Even though I am in the U.S., I realize that European travel time wouldn't be that bad for most. I think there are a fair amount of Europeans in here that would want to meet.

Padium---You got something started here. I know I probably stirred it up a bit---but we are both sincere in this. I am serious in trying to pursue this. I think it will take a lot of organizational effort, and a little bit of luck. But---I feel lucky. I will keep track of the poll I started. So far, close to 70% would like to meet.

As was mentioned earlier by Acacia, it would be nice to see a geographical representation of us.

Who knew we already had such a feature, right here on WP?

http://wrongplanet.net/map

Only problem is there are not many people are on there.
But that's probably because, like me, they had no idea there was a map feature on this site.

Thanks Acacia---I didn't know that. I can't get the image to display on the school computer here, but I will get it when I get home---or have to look at it Sunday, my wife and I will be out of town for a couple days this weekend.

Thanks again.

Travel tips topic

To travel to the US or to Canada from the US requires a PASSPORT now. I have no money. :(

What might be interesting is a sort of reality series about Aspies. Ha. A few of us get together to talk about being AS. I would. I do not know what form it would take but reality TV is still a big thing and cheaper than a hit series. One of these days... :D

I should email this idea to W5 or The Nature of Things. :chin:

I don't know anyone on here very well but if there was a gathering in Toronto I'd consider going.

I'm only 3,000+ miles from Spokane...only place in the state I ever saw was a reconstruction of Stonehenge, and evidently that was on the Oregon border.

I've landed in Portland, but never actually stopped in. The missus would love nothing better than to move back to the Baker City area...but too rural for me...;)

I did sell my record collection to someone online who works out of there (needed money more than tunes)...so if the pickin's got better for awhile, that was me...;)

I can think of a few people from here that I'd like to meet. I'm not sure about group gatherings, I much prefer one-on-one meetings, more than 3 is already a crowd and realistically speaking I don't know if I'd show up, even if I promised to

I think I might like to go if it was reasonably close to where I live. I'd feel more comfortable if it were held in a building with a few rooms to wander in, and out of as opposed to a bit room with possibly hundreds of people in it. I feel anxious just thinking about that kind of scenario. 8O

First of all, I doubt that high of a number would actually seriously consider this. I would seriously consider though, and I think those of us on this thread right now would be serious. But to be honest, I wonder what percentage of members of WP I have actually seen posts from? There must be a large amount that are not actively involved in these posts, I don't know---just speculation.

Second, suppose a large amount was interested. The network could not sponser the whole bunch of us. It would pick certain ones. Then, those of us who were not picked who still wanted to do it would have to pay our own way.

The problem is that then the ones who didn't get chosen are effectively discriminated against and left out. :( I suppose the only way to go about it is to make a list (where everyone who wants to do it has to sign up), and if the number is feasible to go ahead, but if there are too many the idea must be revised/dropped. Unless people voluntarily opt out.

Hmm I hear a lot of people mention they are uncomfortable in big group situations - I must be unusual in that I can deal with them quite well as it's easy either to stand out (and thus be on a different social plane) or blend in in a big group situation. (although smaller group situations, especially all girls, just freak me out).

It's actually amazing how much social leeway you can get by standing out of the crowd; people are so much more lenient with you, and don't seem to forcibly apply the same social laws. I figured this out about a year ago and I've never gone back.

Anyway, I guess if we're doing it geographically I might be forced to miss out as from what I can tell there doesn't seem to be many Australians on here. :(

They would want to meet you---as much as you would want to meet them.

Let's think about this possiblity for a minute.

Suppose we did have this WrongPlanet get together. Think of all the people you enjoy posting with. Now imagine them in real life, and not just by an avatar and typed words. Would these people be who you expected? What would you say to them? Would you feel comfortable speaking face to face to them in real life?

I hope the answer is that we would want to share our thoughts with each other just as we have here in the WrongPlanet. I would hope we would feel comfortable with each other. But I admit, it would be strange in real life wouldn't it?

Would these people really act the way you think they would---or have we formed stereotypes of them based on our lack of social reading?

With all these questions, I would love to meet all of you that I have communicated with since I joined the WrongPlanet last November. I have learned more about my autism here than what any doctor could have told me.

I would hope there would be some fistfights and also some catfights

I'm back from a couple days out of town. This is the first post I've done since being back. And sunshower you are right, the only way to fairly do this would be to have a sign-up and see how many would want to meet---then determine the options. Emotionally, I would really want to do this, but in reality I would probably go mute or something if we did meet. It's funny how I am in social situations. I am actually a high school teacher. My therapist thought that was an odd job for someone on the spectrum, but I said that school was an environment I had become used to. To work somewhere else would've been a change in environment that would have broken away from my school routine. And, as a teacher, I am not actually socializing, but teaching concepts I am interested in---what a perfect occupation if you don't mine speaking in public.

I don't know about the number of members in Australia. There would probably have to be regional get togethers.

And I agree with sunshower on standing out in a crowd and getting leeway.
