Well count me out then. I refuse to attend if media are present.

I'd do it. Though it'd have to be in the Chicago Area; given my lack of transport and all....

taking the El there :P

i gve up on cities a long time ago.....
a rural setting would be a must..

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Me like cities very much.....but fine :P

though that means less public transport.....host it in a town that is on a Amtrak line?

uh.....the Encyclopedia Dramatica articles and TanjaKoch show otherwise....

well the chicago metra(commuter train) goes far out enough I think as does the nyc commuter train (lirr , metro north etc)

the Metra does go far out enough into the outer suburbs....but then again the Chicago Metra has this HUGE ass suburban sprawl to the west and north of the city; to the point that there are two rings of expressways servicing those areas. Metra is used more for suburban use into the city center, though there are city terminals (there's one down the street from where I currently live; and I used it during summer to go to the city center). The CTA El line is for the actual city of chicago. CTA El is better in that they run 24 hours. Metra ends train service, last one at ~12:30 coming out (At least for Rock Island/Joliet route; haven't used the other routes yet). So it depends. For Rock Island if you miss that; you wait until ~5 am for the next bus. Or take the El if you can, then CTA or PACE bus home.

and i'm probably on the very low end as far as sensory stuff so not taking it into account as much as I should. I have no problem with a meetup downtown somewhere although nyc or chi might not be good for me.

The El Loop that runs around the southern part of the city center is LOUD and ANNOYING, especially if you're not used to it. Note the 'El' part; these are elevated trains so you can hear the bumps and clanging and all that. Keep that in mind and prepare accordingly (e.g. WEAR EAR PROTECTION)

There are a lot of good Vietnamese restaurants in Houston.

Right, but relative to what would happen if AS were to get an awareness campaign on TV, we basically do fly under the radar. A lot more people watch TV than follow Encyclopedia Whatever or the other site. Imagine how much harder it will be for those aspies in micro-universes such as gradeschool, after their inherent weaknesses are exposed to the rest of the students.

The media might sponsor such an event provided they felt there was a market for it on television---but I don't want to feel like a sideshow exhibit---autism isn't that well understood by the masses---but isn't that our message? Autism awareness? It would be a great way to let the masses see that we are human and can function fine---in our way.

The only people that need to be aware of AS are those who have it. Once we discovered what makes us different from NTs, we became free to exploit it. Now that we know about ourselves, WE have the upper hand.

I think the WrongPlanet gathering, with proper organization and planning, can work out pretty well. A good place would be a business hotel with plenty of public areas to walk around in and places for recreation, such as a swimming pool and/or a fitness center for those who wish to use it. The gathering can last two days, from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning. Also, organizers would have to be present to keep things flowing smoothly. During free time, a participant can walk around the courtyard, swim in the pool, watch TV in their room, sit in the lobby, or confer with their aide (if they need one). The following schedule would probably suit an average aspie, although it probably leans toward those with a milder AS (like myself).

Friday:
3:00pm - 6:00pm: Participants arrive, registration, getting settled in, free time.
6:00pm - 6:30pm: Welcoming speech
6:30pm - 8:00pm: Introductions, team-building activities, hors d'oeuvres and open bar
8:00pm - 9:00pm: Late dinner
9:00pm - 11:00pm: Organized discussions about issues relevant to aspies
11:00pm: First days ends

Saturday:
9:00am - 10:00am: Breakfast
10:00am - 11:30am: Speeches by leaders of pro-aspie organizations
11:30am - 1:00pm: Sports games led instructors trained in aspie needs
1:00pm - 1:30pm: Free time
1:30pm - 2:30pm: Lunch
2:30pm - 4:30pm: Watching Rain Man or Mercury Rising, per participant's choice
4:30pm - 5:00pm: Discussions of the movies watched
5:00pm - 7:30pm: Team-building activities, informal discussions about aspie issues
7:30pm - 8:30pm: Dinner
8:30pm - 9:30pm for men: Presentations teaching how to find and keep romantic relationships
8:30pm - 9:30pm for women: Presentations teaching how to be approachable and desirable
9:30pm - 11:00pm: Free time
11:00pm - 12:00am: Late-night hors d'oeuvres
12:00am - 12:30am: Motivational speech by a professional educated in aspie issues
12:30am - 2:00am: Late-night party with games led by organizers, open bar available
2:00am: Second day ends

Sunday:
9:00am - 10:00am: Breakfast
10:00am - 11:30pm: Final discussions about aspie issues, participants give evaluations
11:30am - 12:00pm: Closing speech
12:00pm: WrongPlanet gathering ends

Sounds like the choir boot camp type camps I used to go on, except without the 6am aerobics/cross country running sessions before breakfast. Awesome! I am SO there!

(Sadly, I am serious; I love rigorous timetables and training schedules)

so long as it was not compulsory...

alll one needs is "muster" - which is the term used in aussie prison for the frequent roll calls throughout the day.

How would it exactly be 'harder'? Not many people 'flaunt it' AFAIK

I would love it, but the idea of it being media sponsored has my stomach in knots. I'd hate that. It would be come too big a deal, with proably reporters and such and i couldn't deal with it.

shadesofme is right.
yo ucan;t have media sposnorhsip. once you do that, you basically undermine the spirit ofthe gathering and the ideals of an ASD gathering would be severely compromised.
the delightful media would firslty have us sign a legal disclainer enabling them to shoot footage and use it and edit it as is their wish and will. and we all know what will happen then.
they will find themost archetypal and "typical" ASD people they can find to perpetuate the inaccuracies that already permeate society.

you just can't get media involved.

cool and informal get togethers are the go i reckon.
i have already started to buy lotto tickets so i can fly over in ht eeven of a miraculous windfall.

I started a similar thread awhile back, just to test the waters.
Personally I think it's a great idea, however the details work out.

I'd love to do a meet-up. I've met some people with Aspergers by going to some meetings but it would be cool to meet a lot more. Also all the people I've met with Aspergers have been guys. I wouldn't mind being on the tv and having the media cover the event.
