There's no such thing as NT phrases :|. There are cultural phrase out there that annoy me, but nothing that's dependent on the structure of ones brain.

Well, there kind of are NT phrases in my opinion.

"Just do what comes naturally"

"You'll know what to do when you get there"

"Just smile at him and say hi"

"Call her, ask her out. It's easy. Just do it"

That kind of thing would be NT phrases, although they don't all do that sort of assumption that everyone can just jump in and swim the first time, a lot of them do and when I was a teenager I heard those kinds of phrases said to me and to others and that's when I really understood that I was going to have to have a lot of face to face time with my friends and ask a lot of stupid repetitive questions if I was ever going to learn this.

I also get a little irritated when people say "perception is reality".

I've never heard this one 8O People really say this?! What on earth is it even supposed to mean, that they lost contact with reality?

The expression does NOT mean: "how you perceive the world is 'reality'". Obviously appearances can be deceiving.

What it means is that "perception - of you- by other people- is [for all practical intents and purposes] reality".
The practical social reality that you have to live in.

Other folks may get dumb and inaccurate ideas about you -but those notions are their reality- and thats what you have to deal with (so its part of your reality too).So you have to be aware of how you come off to others.

In other words: expect folks to treat you by how they perceive you, not by how you may really be. In short we all need a little PR to sell ourselves. Life aint fair, but thats how life is. So adapt.

Dr Phil rightly uses that expression all of the time to sternly coach guests on his show. If you watch his show you can pick up the layers of meaning from the context. Its a useful admonition- especially for aspies.

Okay, I took it to literally as well. I thought it meant objective reality like in the laws of physics.

Then why do these same ppl tell us to be ourselves and not care what others think when it is certainly not true?
