Okay, sure. I guess Canada and the UK have their problems as well. But at least nobody there has to worry about school shootings or dying because they can't afford healthcare.

In rural Canada, I live two blocks from a hospital that I have not visited even for a checkup for years. It is there to serve the administration first, the drug companies second, and the patient a distant last. The doctors have been reduced to interchangeable prescription clerks as a liability wall for the pushers. I knew two good ones personally, and they were micro-managed by fools until they quit. There are no male medical people in my hospital nor the nearest clinic. They blamed me for their own mistakes and made a minor problem major, that I then had to deal with on my own.
I had a friend who applied for a job in the US from the UK about 40 years ago. He was not feeling well, but forced himself onto a flight for an interview. From across the arrivals hall he heard someone call his name, and "Are you OK? You look like you are having a Penicillin reaction!" He got the job and never went back.
The problem is not socialized medicine per se, it is the lack of systems engineering in management to restore the input of the patients. Large pools of money attract all the parasites. I have another friend in the US who needs insulin, but can't afford the inflated prices there.
We don't have school shootings, but the Police are also out of control, just on a smaller scale than in the US. The Government talks Green, but acts Black, squandering all our hopes.

. . . it illustrates the depth of the problem. If I lived there, I'd probably have more UK examples.

in sweden you must demonstrate proficiency in swedish, to get long-term residence. i don't know about anybody else, but swedish ain't especially an easy language to learn.

What I'm really hoping for at this moment is that people honestly try asking why the US is getting this way, notice that Europe has higher unemployment numbers and is less on the verge than we are, and maybe see what shakes out in the middle on that. My suggestion to them would be to look at pretty much any of Mark Blyth's economic lectures and, after a pause, deeply consider the possibility that the US could use a sovereign wealth fund among other things.

Yang actually nailed this too which is why he couldn't be Democratic nominee.
