I would agree with the former. I have immense difficulty in immersing myself in most fantasy worlds, whether in books or on screen. I enjoy ones that 'bend the rules' a little, but they should still be fundamentally set in the real world.
It's also interesting you should mention Tolkien. The only aspect of Middle Earth I have ever been able to really take interest in is the Shire and hobbits, whose lives are so generally prosaic that if one forgets they are other-than-human, Shire lore can be treated virtually as historical fiction.
