Actually, Al and I are friends.

Okay.

One reason I "lurk" is because I usually don't feel comfortable posting. I feel awkward. I can't quite explain it, I just feel like I should shut up. It's not just this forum, it's all of them.

The other reason, is I feel like I could be a socially inept NT. I often don't feel like I miss social cues, or I lack empathy, or generally, I'm doing anything wrong. Could I make friend if I wanted friends? Or do I not want friends because I can't make any? I usually feel a mixture of social anxiety and social indifference.

Oh, it also takes me forever to put enough words together to make a post.

I figure he is just trying to get me to post more so he has someone to talk to.

Yes I know this isn't private. But it shouldn't be so PUBLIC. There are no places private since they can see in between your curtains with satellites. They can even see under the closet door so no place is private. It sucks!

If one is socially inept they are probably somewhere on the spectrum. Some of the most severe Aspies are the ones that think they don't miss social clues. We're not known for being good objectively. You don't have to lack empathy to be an Aspie. Most of us do empathize; its just that we don't know how to verbally communicate it to others when it counts. I think the DSM may be wrong on that one.

But most importantly I think you should start posting more because you have a cool avatar. Plus you gotta hit the 1,000 post mark so you can have your own custom ranking.

That makes a lot of sense. Both things I hadn't thought about.

Paranoid much? I highly doubt that there are "hundreds" of researchers on here, or people from Autism Speaks. (Autism Speaks can't even monitor its own message boards.) I'd hope most psychology students learn about the ethics of research on human beings as well as the scientific method, besides. Message board "research" is bad science.

I have a few confessions to make, at risk of seeming like a Very Bad person. I've joked about some of the posts on this forum before, with my partner who I met on these boards. I find that people here, like people on any message board, sometimes make comments which to me seem stupid and deserving of a little mockery. I'm sorry if anyone here finds that horribly offensive, but this is a public space and people have the right to respond to comments posted here. There are more private autism-related forums for anyone who wants that kind of environment. But why not accept WP for what it is, instead of wallowing in paranoid notions about spies and voyeurs?

Maybe an NT person is curious about AS and wants to learn more. I've lurked on MANY message boards, including boards for diseases which I do not have. I used to be interested in certain medical topics, and found these public message boards interesting. Why is that so wrong?

Who is "they"? No offense, but you seem rather paranoid. I wouldn't worry so much about what other people think. Most people are too busy to care that much about someone they don't even know. Sorry, but a lot of the stuff posted on this forum is pretty boring.

If anyone has a better idea of how to make a message board like this less public, go for it. Create your own message board. But don't expect everyone to post on this one.

I'd think that an aspie board would be more understanding of the choice to socially observe rather than participate.
