I think the theory is too generalizing. Avatars usually say something about the person's interests, personality, who they look up to, what they think looks cool, etc. I don't see how cartoons are supposed to show someone's insecurity. If someone was insecure, they'd just simply post a picture which isn't a picture of themselves lol.

Sounds like you're analyzing too much...

Btw, I know this is a little off topic, but do you think they could be good enough to be artwork? I was thinking of printing some properly and maybe showing them to someone who isn't my parents hahaha.

There is definitly an artistic quality to them, and I would say you are very good at making the photos look amazing. Best thing you could do would be to show someone who you trust, and who would also criticize them just to see what they think. I think that, based on what I have seen, you could do professional photography.

:D

Zonder, I also think that's a very cool photo.

I just like to be anonymous (and the same applies to most of the places I go online - I very rarely post photos of myself). And, Kurt happens to be one of my obsessions.

^Anonymous is good and Kurt is great! I had an altered photo of myself up as an avatar for about a day, but took it down. Kind of made me uncomfortable.

I used to have an avatar that was a syleized P... with my username under it. I just found it on a japanese companies website... and thought it was some grand coincidence.

But I really liked the avatars that are the real pictures of people. For whatever reason I'm more drawn to posts if there is an actual 'person' attached to them. So I decided to do the same... I think this is the best pic I have at showing off my personality.

Cartoon approximations of their personality/image are not as good, but are okay if people are shy about posting a pic.

I think the avatar should best represent you as a person... in either a real or abstract sense.

I'd like to see more avatars of photos.

For me garyww, I didn't want to use a graphic avatar, so I used a picture of me when I was around 10 or 11 years old---even though I am 44 years old. I use a youth picture of myself because I often look back on my life now (knowing now of my autism) and find myself fascinated with my upbringing concerning my issues. My recent diagnosis makes it so clear why I was perceived as odd and eccentric by those in my school, and also by my family. I can remember when that picture was taken of me. I was standing next to a vase of roses Dad had bought for Mom on their anniversary. I remember liking my hair long, but Mom wanted me to get it cut. So I let her get me an appointment to get it cut. Then, when I became a teenager, I let it grow long again. My use of that picture also relates to the fact that even though I am now middle aged, I still feel like a child inside sometimes. I still like to play with my narrow interests---roller coasters, trains, circus models, magic tricks, etc. And, I was so...so...innocent when that picture was taken. :D

I figured your picture was from the 70's because it sure looks like it.

I love Benny & Joon so I plan on keeping my avatars based on the movie.

Mine says "I wear sandals that have a shallow tread and a neutral heel".

Others I've had:

Me neither. Dilbert, though, encapsulates rather a lot of my existence. Let him carry the load.

I have no wish to show my face upon the internet at wrong planet, it might give some of you nightmares and I would rather the people in my profession did not see me here.

I value my privacy and I like to keep the different parts of my life apart.

I choose the orange cat becuase I thought he looks sweet, also I have not got the software tools (Pant Shop Pro) or know how to use the free image utilities in windows to reduce the number of pixels to post a photo of me which does not show my face.
