I think Wrongplanet has lost its way

I dont use AS websites much but when i do i seek information for my son - personally WP has always given a great insight, help, advice, laughs, and broad range opinion which i like - i love the members comments, i read and smile, cause i am a parent of AS and i love seeing younger members comments - it makes me feel better, that my son is not alone in this big world and some of his problems are common where he thought and so did i we were the only ones, and when he is ready he will come online and meet a great range of people - i know this is a US based site, but havent found one in the UK i or my son can relate to. Love this site, and love all those comments negatives and positives. Thank you to all the kids, and young people that write stuff, it gives me hope as a parent when im lost (as parents we do not get given a text book & dont know the answers)

Yep I've noticed a change too. For one thing there's just too many people because the server seems to meltdown every evening or something. I can't get the pages to load a lot of evenings and its extremely slow. The topics used to be more original and interesting. Now its the same stuff over and over. It seems we may have run out of stuff to talk about?!

I think it hurts things that now AS is seen as the jerk disorder so everyone who can't get along with others self diagnoses themselves with AS. Then again here you have a group of AS people so how could anyone expect people who have a problem with social interaction to get along? WP is still better than the other forums but I wish it would be moderated more and even have the moderators lead more discussions to help re-focus everyone.

I'm also concerned for what seems like an increase in super young members. My concern is that I think a lot of discussions here are inappropriate and perhaps even disturbing for the younger people. If I had a child I would not want them on here till they were at least 17. I'm not suggesting banning the youngsters either; I'm just saying I think a lot of us are really bad role models.

Well, I've gotten into a couple of fights on here, but the two people whom I had a problem with seem to have disappeared. Overall, though, I don't think WP has become more hostile; although it is kind of boring sometimes. As someone else said, it almost feels like we've run out of stuff to talk about.

Somebody told me that if I wanted to have a 'good time' I need to go to WP.
I thought it was going to be one of those you know what type of places.

I don't know, some things may have changed, but I am mostly here as a place to go, and have some interesting conversations and maybe learn something new. My AS makes it hard for me to have much relationships, as I basicaly know no one, but atleast on here I know some people, and many of the people that come here have the chance of being interesting AS people like myself and not people who have no idea.

Personally, WP has changed since I first joined. General acceptance has turned into outright rejection of NT's and curists. They have a right to be on this board too as long as they behave themselves,and while it is true there will always be an Atomik_Psycho or some other mindfu*k that comes along, the majority of non ASD people here have good intentions. Like that girl from Princeton who was recruiting for a research project, i think Bianca was her name, some of you were downright mean to her, there is no excuse for that even though we have been trolled by NT's several times and I'm sure some of you were suspicious. The way I see it, NT's come to Wrongplanet for two reasons: One, they are interested in learning about us, or Two, they want to cause trouble for us. I think we should welcome the former among us, and as for the latter, there is always the Banhammer.

Also, there has been hostility towards a lot of ASD people, specifically those who support a cure for ASD. I know that a lot of people are against Autism Speaks, and for good reason, they are mindfu*ks through and through. However, a lot of the anger we feel at Autism Speaks for their base ignorance is aimed, whether intentionally or not, at those who support the cure but don't believe in Autism Speaks' message. I must remind you, not all of us have the benefit of having high-functioning Aspergers, for a lot of people on the lower end it's more curse then blessing. These people support the cure for good reason, and I don't think we should be outright hostile to them even if they decide to cast their lot with Autism Speaks (given, of course, that they follow the standard upheld here). I know I am as guilty of this as the rest of you, what with my talks of insurrection and revolution, but to tell you the truth I'm getting tired of it, and I'm worried that I might already be blacklisted for what I have said against Autism Speaks, the US Government, and NT's in general (which could be bad seeing as I intend to fly out West for my Spring Break), so I'm considering renouncing my claims and promoting a peaceful, democratic solution instead (a big change for me, I know).

The point I am trying to make here is that, even if their opinion differs from the rest of us, unless someone is not following the rules or is deliberately being hostile I think they should be given a chance, the same chance all of us Aspies get when we first join here.

For what purpose would diagnosticians mislabel someone AS?

My GP wondered, and the psychologist who diagnosed me after extensive testing explained that he would still be paid, no matter whether I was diagnosed AS or not.

There is no ulterior motive here. I am not sure someone can self-diagnose, though a person may suspect s/he is AS, and share similar traits. There is no shame to being or not being AS.

Some people may be introverted, shy, be depressed or angry. These traits are not part of AS, though are able to co-exist with AS. There are many factors involved, and for someone to be sure it is always best to seek out a professional. And not everyone needs or wants this.

Everybody always dons their rose tinted spectacles in threads like these... 'back in the day.' Yeah right. As somebody pointed out, forums go through phases.
