It's just the luck of the draw basically. I really wish autism gave me the fast metabolism. It would be so much better if I didn't have to worry on what I just ate. But maybe autistic people process food differently which is one of the reasons we autistic people are either extremely skinny or overweight.

up to 30 or so, i had the excess metabolism where i could eat a french-fried shetland pony for dinner and still not be full, then suddenly it was like somebody flipped a switch and then i had to watch every calorie.

I was more or less normal weight, mostly 10 lbs too high, until in my 30s a psychiatrist gave me Nardil. He said, "It does not cause weight gain, it causes wanting food. So it is a question of self-control. This is the best medication for your problem." (my problem: he had Dx'd it as Suicidal and nothing else.)

Result: I gained 50 pounds in 3 months, never lost it, but learned a new habit of craving/eating that eventually gave me 30 more pounds than that. No, I haven't come out the other side of this one. Gym trainers get embarrassed when my weight falls off the high end of their BMI machine. ("Oh, it seems to be out of order" hiding it under a magazine.)

Ziprasidone, the mood stabilizer I'm on, has caused me to gain something like 15-25 pounds, I'm not exactly sure how much. I think it's interacted w/my now middle-aged body. I still have perhaps vain hopes of staying on this medication b/c it helps me, but losing all that weight. My not exercising obviously has contributed too.
That reminds me that the meds I on might of contributed to my weight gain & binging. I want to try weaning myself off two of them but now's not a good time

While I think the main factor is calorie intake, a second factor is the ability of some people on the spectrum to get into a flow state, in which the brain is extremely focused for a long period of time. It is likely that this state burns a lot of calories. There may be other mental states that do similarly.

I was a skinny kid and a skinny teenager, a skinny young adult - and I am now an overweight 30 year old. C'est la vie.

I'm very thin. I was chubby in high school and burnt it all off my first semester at university.

I'm also generally small. Someone told me recently I have a "delicate frame."

I am quite overweight, somewhat into the obese category.

Related to autism:
--I forget to eat until I am very hungry, then eat a great deal
--I don't have the organization ability to remind myself to eat regular meals, or to cook healthy food; most of what I eat is simple and the most complex things tend to be sandwiches or salads.
--Yes, taste is a stim. It's possible for me to keep eating because the food feels/tastes interesting, and not notice I am full.
--I am somewhat undersensitive to both hunger and fullness.

Needless to say, this kind of thing leads to being overweight. I am lucky in that I am also very physically active (walking is also a quasi-stim for me), and I prefer food that most people think of as "healthy" (bread, vegetables, soup, milk, etc.). My doctor has recently done a set of tests on me and says I am very healthy and everything except my weight is well within normal limits. Hopefully my tendency to eat real food and my enjoyment of movement will balance out the extra weight.

Yea I believe it may have something to do with your weight. I'm the same way I just keep gaining weight no matter what I do.. :(

some of us would benefit from a personal coach/trainer, or a damned good and smart friend.
