Just today, my family talked with me about the possibility of signing me up for Oregon's medical marijuana program. My seizures have been increasing as of recently, so that's why my family wants to sign me up. However, I'm conflicted on this issue. While I do agree that cannabis does have some benefits, many aspects of medical cannabis use worries me.

For example, I have read that people who use marijuana for medical purposes often abuse marijuana and/or are arrested even if they show proof that they are members of medical marijuana programs.

depends on where you live. in any case, it is best to be discreet rather than discrete, as they say.

I think the illegality of it is what makes smokers pushy. If it were legal, then there wouldn't be as vibrant a sub culture.

You are forgetting the breatharian solution!
Cures 100% of problems if you just give it enough time. Truly effective self-medication.

Totally forgot about breatharians, and I even read something about them the other day.

From my experience and observation it is no worse then alcohol as far as negative effects and side effects.

One of the best arguments for legalization to me was removing it as a money maker for organized crime. It seemed that keeping it illegal only promoted and increased gangs/cartels much like 'Prohibition' did in the USA in the 1920's and 30's.

I had friends wearing those NORML T-shirts back almost at the beginning. I remember thinking it was only a matter of time before it was legalized, for decriminalization came fairly quickly in some states. But I would not have guessed then, that it would take so long.

One of the best arguments for legalization is ending the practice of sending people to jail for using it - some end up in prison for life for marijuana possession or use.

I'd be willing to put up with occasional second-hand burning tire smoke, if that was the only alternative to people being thrown in jail and having their rights infringed.

Going on from those that had said earlier "If you don't like it, then don't put it into your body. Who cares what other put into their bodies?"

That comes across as very defensive, especially in a thread that is aimed directed at fellow people who do have a problem with it. It could easily be said by those that are defensively pro-MJ "If you don't like the content of the thread, then stay out of it. Who cares if others disagree about MJ?"

The problem is with MJ, that unlike tobacco, inhalation of MJ can make you high, even if it's secondhand smoke. If it can impair your ability to drive, do you want to be around someone who smokes it? A lot of my immediate family were/are MJ users for a long time, and I've been around them enough to see the long term effects of what happens when you smoke it too long. Dulled intellect, bad memory etc, I am the outsider that notices what the user doesn't.

And many people argue for legalization so it removes the incentive of profit in illegal drug dealing. No it won't. Should it become legal, they'll just move onto other, more harder drugs that are still illegal. When alcohol was banned during Prohibition, the same drug culture was there to make a profit. When alcohol became legal, they moved onto other things.

If MJ is supposedly this fantastic drug, then wouldn't it be better to isolate the beneficial compounds instead, instead of legalizing it and inviting all of the trouble from intoxicated stoners out in public? Or legalizing it for only medical use, so that the people who actually need it are able to have it?

This thread is in a public forum with people of many different opinions, the OP posted about why they are sick of the marijuana culture and why...they are going to get input from people who agree and disagree. Also how is it defensive to state that if someone does not like cannabis they should not use it, and its not really their business if other people use it? Also can't speak for everyone but if I only went on threads where I liked every post I wouldn't probably be able to find any threads to post in.

If someones in a room where marijuana is being smoked then yes there may be enough smoke in the air to get people contact high, however say someones smoking on their front porch and someones walking their dog by....they aren't going to get high from it. There may be inconsiderate people who use cannabis and don't care whos around....but a lot do try to respect people who don't smoke from what I have seen. Also any drug can be abused or used too much, also do these people just use cannabis or could other drugs also be playing a role? Excessive long term use of cannabis probably is not a good thing, but there is moderation and plenty of people use it responsibly.

All that proves is prohibition doesn't work.

No....all the components of the plant are important there are studies indicating that isoloating specific chemicals and turning it into some pharmacutical pill is not as effective. Also from what I've seen its more likely a group of drunks would cause more trouble than a group of stoners....what is a group of stoners going to do? sit there and talk about deep stuff, laugh at things or simply chill and enjoy the high what exactly is all this trouble stoners cause?

I can't be bothered to google but it's something stupid like needing to consume your own body weight in cannabis during an impossibly short period of time.
Tobacco on the other hand people have actually died from an overdose

Quote:
The LD50 of nicotine is 50 mg/kg for rats and 3 mg/kg for mice. 0.5-1.0 mg/kg can be a lethal dosage for adult humans, and 0.1 mg/kg for children. Nicotine therefore has a high toxicity in comparison to many other alkaloids such as cocaine, which in mice has an LD50 of 95.1 mg/kg.

preaching is bad in any way or form.

I generally don't care what people do, but I hate being the subject of preaching.

As long as people keep their beliefs in whatever to themselves, I don't care.
For example, in MY experience:
Marijuana is cool, never been bothered about it.
Vegans... oh my... those I can't stand, personally. But I just don't listen or walk away. I really can't be bothered to waste time with such conversations, heh.

Civil Liberties

I don't care what they say about health risks, medical bills, etc, etc. I want my burger, fries and coke. They will probably change their mind half a dozen times about the effects of this or that chemical anyway.

Yes I am sick of the pro-MJ culture. I do think it should be legalized, for a lot of reasons, all reasons already stated in this thread. I'm just tired of hearing about it. Some people make it out to be a wonder plant that is going to boost the economy and bring peace on Earth and save us all. It's almost like a religion.

I haven't used any marijuana myself in well over 10 years, probably more like 15 years, and I don't miss it. I look back on it now as just another pointless social activity that I felt compelled to participate in but never truly enjoyed. And the culture that has grown up around it turns me off so much that I just want nothing to do with it.

I'm not into the "Pot Culture" at all, I don't drink and I do not do drugs.

But with that said I am totally into natural healing and natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals.
For instance I would much rather see someone treat their chronic debilitating migraines with weed together with acupuncture than Triptains (which cause heart failure and disease) and highly addictive codeine or morphine.

I have no issue with weed being use to help people of whatever physical/mental problem they have.

Let's not confuse self-medicating with substance abuse, as is so often done. Humans have been self-medicating since we've been humans. Widespread access to organized medical care has only been around for less than a century. That's a tiny fraction of human history. Most people in the world today Self medicate. I don't know how this term came to have negative connotations. Do people think that humans who self medicated for 200,000 years, and survived just fine as a species, became too stupid to know what makes us feel better in the last hundred years? When you drink a cup of coffee you self medicate. When you drink a glass of wine to relax at the end of the day you self medicate. When you take an aspirin because you have a headache you self medicate. Yet all of these things will kill you if you abuse them. See the difference?

Brilliantly said!
