I've been lurking around the forums for awhile now and decided to join. I'll edit my profile and upload an avatar later, because right now I'm tired and just wanted to ask a question. I believe I have Asperger's Syndrome, but am not sure. When I was 8 yrs old my teachers brought it to my parents attention that I may be autistic, not much was known then about AS even in the mid to late 90's when this happened. I would often space out and be in my own little world. It didn't seem that I had much of interest in people in general too. I was taken to my family doctor and he mentioned AS, but said it didn't seem to be a problem. I was mis-diagnosed at the age of 12 with OCD. I had routines and obsessive behaviors. I constantly became so involved with certain odd subjects and things. I used to have to look at the dates on any coin I came across, things of that nature. When I was 18 a psychiatrist that I was seeing also mentioned possible AS.
The only thing is that I make eye contact well, even though I've been told I tend to gaze at people as if I have shell shock. I use body language and project it as well. However, I feel I cannot read or pick up on non-verbal communication well. I don't speak in monitone, and for the most part have expression/emotion in my voice. Also, I think that I'm good at facial expressions, albeit oddly. I get involved with certain subjects and go at them head on, but loose interest within a few months and move onto something else. I didn't have any friends all though elementary school, middle, and most of high school. I now have a few close friends. Still though, I often hang out with them for periods of time and then disapear into self isolation. With me not minding it at all, but they seem to. I was going to post this in the other "do you think..' thread but thought I'd make my own. Like that guy's post, I also listen to the same song hours on end and drive to visit the same places. Also, I'm not good at starting or finding serious relationships though I do have a deep interest. I'm obsessed with sudoku and ken ken puzzels and get upset if I'm in a situation where I'm not allowed to do them. I take long walks to read license plate numbers.
I'll add more later, but for now, what do you think?

Well...read up on ASD's and ask your family about your presentation as a child.
Also, what you are saying perhaps indicate an ASD but it could just as easily indicate a number of other things.

Perhaps, just read and ask family about your history, and find a good ASD specialist in your area with whom you can discuss it all. If a family member can go with you to a specialist, that is also good, because it means there is more than just your perception of yourself. Failing this, try to get documentation from others who know you - regarding how you present and behave.

whatever, good luck on your journey in life. I hope you can find peace and some joy in being you, whatever the outcome. :)

Like I mentioned before I have a lot of stereotyped and repetetive interests and behaviors
poor handwriting
I have excelent hearing when it comes to small noises and sounds. However, horrible in crowds or when watching tv I have the volume very high
sensitive to touch
motor clumsiness
also, very logical and analytical
I don't pick up on sarcasm well. If it's obvious in their voice then I do. But it could be the most rediculous and obviously not true statement and if they say it with a normal attitude and voice then I believe it.

It's very possible that you do, though you're not going to get a straight answer from anyone here most likely.

I would re-iterate your doctor's opinion. If you don't think it's a problem, there shouldn't be a need to seek a diagnosis. Feel free to hang out here, read, ask questions, etc.

And welcome.
