What would you like to call it instead?

Select from poll.

If it were to be changed, it should not contain "asperger's" in it simply because it is far to easy to make fun of.

I mean.. really, I'm can put up with lame insults, but when I'm interrupted on a regular basis just so somebody can point out what it sounds like.. Blah to that.

I don't see the point to renaming Asperger's.Changing the name of the syndrome because people make fun of how it sounds, seems alot like a kid wanting to change their name because their classmates make fun. It'll always be something.

Allow me to demonstrate:

A kid named Harry; Hairy. Stephanie ;Step-on-me. Louis;Screwy Louie. Hell, a friend of mine's last name is Stitt--And when he hit junior high and had to change for gym class...well, with 12 or 13 other boys in a locker room atmosphere,I think you can imagine how that turned out...

Anyway...as for interruptions,it'll get better once the novelty of "Ass-burgers" wears off. Eventually.(Teehee Ass-burgers) :P

^^ I very much agree. I believe my little name has been twisted in many ways that to me do not appear immediately apparent. ^^ Also, I did not notice any happy way to twist the meaning of 'Asperger's Syndrome'. ^^ That is quite alright however, sorry for being horrible.

Apart from the thread topic being repeated monthly...

what bites my bullet is Asperger's being replaced with Autism, which now encompasess anything to do with a difficult upbringing.

Asperger's Syndrome should really be left alone as it is currently classified.... it is an obvious condition, succint within the Autism spectrum.

But I do propose...

AS+
AS-

AS+S
AS-S

AS+s
AS-s

and fro those that don't want to categorize any further plain old fits any shoe AS

well others disagree. could be an extreme form of NVLD. probably other opinions as well.

anyway this may just be grouped into Autism in the dsm-v which comes out in 2012. so perhaps Aspergers would be HFA for the most part.

autism or ASD

and it is going to happen whether we like it or not

My main reason for this way of thinking is my family situation where there are a few people on the spectrum. Foe example I am dx'ed AS and my nephew is HFA. I prefer it all under the one banner as i believe categorisations can breed bigotry and hierarchies. Is AS "better than" autism? some like to imply so. i find such demarcations rather distasteful.

Asperger's in not replaced by "Autism" any more than malignant tumor of the breast is replaced by cancer, or beans are replaced by vegetables.

You know Millie, I've always found the name game to be distasteful as well. The only thing I'm not quite clear on is what the demarcations are supposed to tell you about the person--I've heard the usual explanation of functioning level and life skills--but what does it tell one in the way how can I accommodate their needs?

For instance, if someone tells me they have Asperger's as well, I may try to use more concrete to-the-point speech; as figures of speech may be confusing. Turn off the radio when we're interacting, or try not to take a blunt manner of speaking too personally--But that's all based on what I've experienced and what I've learned. It may be helpful to the person in question or it may be positively useless!

For someone whose only experience with the spectrum is the blurb "autism" or "aspergers" as it blips across their consciousness like the barcode scanners in the grocery store, what (if anything) do these labels mean?

of course it's still being debated on weather to include Nvld (non verbal learnng disorder also nld) in the autistic spectrum

I agree, I may have Aspergers, plus.. but I am still an autistic adult, there are many variables, but we all come under the bigger autism umbrella, its the core of who we are, our autism hearts
