If are referring to support outside education, they're more commonly known as support staff, support workers, personal assistants and carers [though depends as will find people who hate or like each one].
It depends on the country as well, but getting a support worker will depend on the care assessment done by social services, which is to assess whether a person needs support, and also how much of it [known as 'care package'],it may be done different if are in a country that doesn't get support funded.
And again,it depends on country, but be aware of using care agencies, better so to choose a specialist support organisation,or social services/council staff instead if that is an option.
Luckily they're not allowed to work with am anymore apart from using the same waking night staff everytime as there has been a shortage of council staff, but have experience with several care agencies that the rubbish council run residential homes bring in [prime time and morgan care] and they dont stay in the agency very long, they're not well trained in autism [they offer it to them, but was told by one the staff they have to pay to go on training courses which puts a lot of them off],they're never trained in makaton or any other alt communication, they're very very very difficult to understand as they're often just arrived from other countries, they're often unreliable, and some of them are nasty with the way they restrain or handle self...and,they;re not all meds trained.
If are in the UK,they offer something called direct payment here, which people who have been awarded a care package can use the funding they were given to pay for a support staff they advertise for,or if they're unable to sort it out themselves, appointees, family, the council or other orgs can do it.
