We called it the 1000yd stare in my family. My sister (NT) and I have it. I learned to not do it in public. My spouse sees me doing it sometimes. I just short circuit and the eyes are gone.

And the point is?

Point? None whatsoever. Beyond sharing an experience with being told I looked funny. Where you expecting something specific that I should have anticipated and included? Please advise.

I think the question was asked because you didn't ask a question which would facilitate discussion. You essentially made a comment about yourself.

A good follow-up question might have been: "Does anyone in your family have a nickname for when you zone out?"

We've been discussing this exact same topic over here in this thread:

i do that too. i put it to good use in high school marching band and in army ceremonies. the only issue is that as i've gotten older, it seems, my tolerance of having the sun in my eyes has gotten worse so i can't keep my eyes open very well with the sun in my field of vision or reflecting off of something in my field of vision. this has lead to some comical or terrifying moments such as waking up (standing) and realized i had slept through a 2 hour retirement ceremony.

sometimes i drop into it when i'm visualizing complicated things (i'm obsessed with a cyclical link between the inter-galactic universe and the subatomic universe).

sometimes i drop into it when i'm trying to visualize the best path through a complicated situation (like when i got fired from my cushy bank job a month ago)

i like to think of it as diverting brainpower.
