I like doing the sudoku, but I rarely have enough time to finish it before I have to do other stuff. :(

I love Sudoku.

My dad does these really hard ones called "Killer Sudoku." I can't do those ones, but I enjoy ones that are quite hard, so that they make my brain work, but I can finish most of them.

On the basis that Everyone In The Known Universe (TM) appears to be playing Sudoku, I refuse to even find out what it is, never mind give it a go.

I'm a contrary git when I want to be!

If it ever becomes uncool then I may give it a go...

I'm half way to being a grumpy old man now, I just need to master the old bit and I'll be there. :D

I just started playing. I am still working on the easy section of the book. I can finish each one in about 10 minutes. I can't put it down once I start which is so frustrating so I should stick with the easy ones I think.

I don't play it, but my mum is obsessed with it. She plays it online every morning and talks about it quite a lot, actually. I'll have to tell her about this thread. On second thought, maybe I shouldn't. She'd probably want to become a member of WP just to talk about sudoku with you guys.

it takes me about 20 minutes at the hard level. Diabolical and fiendish take me up to 50 minutes. I have gone online and seen some amazing mathmatical analyses of different kinds of puzzles such as circular and rectangle wraparound sudoku. I have acquired one 3-d sudoku but have not tried it yet - saving it for a rainy day.

just so you don't have to go looking, here is an easy one:
Image
and here is a place to print out a grid:
http://www.sudoku.org.uk/sudoku_worksheet.htm

this is another kind of worksheet:
http://www.ccs.neu.edu/home/ramsdell/tools/sudoku.pdf

The puzzle starts with a 9x9 grid. The more numbers filled in,the easier the puzzle.
The rules are that each square and each line have to contain the numbers one through nine. You can't duplicate any numbers, so you have to pay attention to two dimensions as well as the square in which you are working.

Another way of posting puzzles is to substitute 0s for the blank squares. I will post the solution this way. I think this woud be a great addition to the puzzle page. There are a lot of puzzle generators and because of this, most puzzles are not copyrighted. Though we could just post links to puzzles in the games forum or on the puzzle page....

I'll post the solution to the above puzzle tomorrow.

This is gonna help my short term memory. Currently my short term memory is at 3 items.

Mish?

If you are frustrated then stop for a bit, but come back to it. It is satisfying once you figure out how to start solving it.

Try thinking about what you know and dont know about a particular cell. Usually there will be at least 1 or column where there are only 3 unfilled. Think about what what 3 numbers those are. Then look at each 3X3 square, say 1 column has the number 1, 5, and 8 missing. If one 3X3 square that that column or row passes through has 1 somewhere in it, you know in that 3X3 square there cant be a 1 in the column or row you are considering. Figure out what numbers can be in a cell, then eliminate the numbers that can't be there.

The better your short term memory the more rows you can consider at once while thinking about a single empty cell.

Sodoku is japanese in origin, and requires no mathmatical skills. It can be done mathmaticly, but its on the whole simpler to do it normally. Anyone tried Samurai Sodoku?

If you had it on a piece of paper you could fill in what each square could be and then just cross off numbers as you logically eliminate them. It is an excersize of short term memory however trying to solve it without doing that.
