I was thinking about semantic-pragmatic disorder today. And how some Aspies are good at banter and others not. Why is this, I wondered. It's probably explainable by those who struggle with banter being the semantic-pragmatic people.

There's no doubt I am the semantic-pragmatic disorder type.

Characteristics often exhibited, from Wikipedia:

* delayed language development
* aphasic speech (word search pauses, jargoning, echolalia, word order errors, word category errors, verb tense errors or dysfluency)
* difficulty with pronouns or pronoun reversal
* difficulty understanding questions
* difficulty understanding choices and making decisions.
* difficulty following conversations or stories. Conversations are "off topic" or "one sided".
* difficulty extracting the key points from a conversation or story; they tend to get lost in the details
* difficulty with verb tenses
* difficulty explaining or describing an event
* tendency to be concrete or prefer facts to stories
* have difficulty understanding satire or jokes
* have difficulty understanding contextual cues
* difficulty in reading comprehension
* difficulty with reading body language
* difficuly in making and maintaining friendships and relationships because of delayed language development.
* difficulty in distinguishing offensive remarks
* difficulty with organizational skills

Don't most people with AS fit that criteria except for the language delay? Is language delay required for SPD?

most jokes bore me, and make me want to scream if I have to hear them more than once. I love satire, irony, and puns, though.

I admit I did chuckle at this one my kid brought home:
Q: what did the fish say when it ran into the wall?
A: dam!

I guess it's a philosophical question if Semantic Pragmatic Disorder is a seperate 'disorder' to Aspergers and Autism, I do feel that if the Autistic spectrum needs a generic name, Semantic Pragmatic Disorder would be far better. It's sort of the thing which links the spectrum together, with individual variations add on.

So I'd have Semantic Pragmatic Disorder with additional obsession and low eye contact. Sort of more meaningful than 'I've got Aspergers'.

I used to have some problems understanding satire, but now I love it, too. I spoke at a very early age so did not have a language delay at all. I do have most of the other symptoms, though not too badly and mostly when I'm stressed (eg. get word-finding issues then, but they used to be way worse when I was like 19/20).
