I actually like being autistic, but I'm tired of fighting wiht people over trival things like tapping. I'm afraid that I may loose my ability to completly focus on what I'm doing without getting bored, but I feel selfish for making things hard for everyone else around me. What cures have you people heard of?

If it's the stimming you're getting into trouble about, maybe try to find a less intrusive stim.

Perhaps fidget with a pen, or doodle, or move your fingers in a pattern. That's what I do in order to avoid my main stim (which is finger biting), if I'm aware of it.

There are no cures for autism (at this time, at least); there are treatments, depending on what you wish to address. The tapping may be able to be redirected (or in my case, I just took up playing the drums - no more questions), the focus may be treated with therapies or medication, and so forth.

Why would anyone want a cure if it changes your brain and whole personality?
I say keep on stimming! if others don't like it then it's their problem not yours!

Wow!! i've gone all millitant! 8O

That's not you needing a 'cure' of some sort. Don't 'cure' yourself if you'll be miserable but others will be happy, that's the wrong reason to do anything! There isn't a cure, anyways, or at least nothing that's not a placebo with a chance of death. 8O
Either redirect the stim or tell them to go screw themselves, you NEED to do this, it's a necessary autistic process.

I remember when I was younger people always used to be on me about my stims (tapping, repetitive stuff) which of course then I didn't know where stims, I just thought I was a nervous person. It would me make furious when people would tell me to stop - or worse - put their hands on me to force me to stop. Oooh that would make me furious.

Over time I just learned to redirect myself, substitute with another stim, or just not be in situations where anyone would notice, which is a lot easier to do when you're out of school and away from family. Good luck, there's no cure. You just find ways to adjust.

I would not want to cure something I am. How do you cure your NT?

I'd fiddle with the paper or play with my fingers or my hair. Many people are annoyed with sounds, same as people on the spectrum but I can't figure out what the difference is between us and them being annoyed by them.

This is more X-men then Cancer. Don't get your uniqueness cured. Curb your issues with your strengths. So you fidget. I am extremely ticklish, itchable, sweatable, but I laugh(and feel exhuberant) about almost anything remotely funny, I relish every over-amped flavour in my mouth(Barring bitter), etc, etc, etc. It has it's awesome sides. It's just that the not-so-awesome sides are a problem to others rather then yourself. I get why that can be annoying.

Just don't assume it's a tiny thing like fidgetting that makes you hated. There's a lot of reasons why people can hate other people. Being mildly boinky is NOT one of them.

(Just for clarification, trauma on the part of the hater, or obliviousness/malign intent on the part of the hated DO qualify)

I build little gadgets out of Lego by combining gears and such to create devices to play with in my hands. I keep one in a pocket and can roll it around unobtrusively if I need to stim when other people are around. On my own I just pull on my hair.

Cure? For what? Be yourself. If necessary, adapt what you do to be inoffensive/unobtrusive in public.

well.......
When I was first diagnosed, I asked the cure question too. My shrink made a (stupid) comment that the only cure is in the form of a pill measured in caliber, not mg.

A bullet, get it?

seriously, just learn to embrace your inner weirdness, and let your freak flag fly, and you'll hopefully be fine.

Yes. And cutting off your arm will cure a blister on your finger.

I think the best solution is to cure society. You know, the usual civil-rights stuff that any minority starts getting together when they realize, "hey, wait a minute, they're treating us unfairly." I bet by the time the teenagers here are fifty, we'll have acceptance at least to the degree that black people in America have now (i.e., not perfect, but infinitely improved since segregation).

Death is far less painful than trying to rectify society if you must change your ASD. One can withdraw from society, like most with an ASD do, but you'll still be judged negatively for something you have no say over (see: ASD).
