I was wondering if anyone here suffers from severe shyness (Social anxiety) & that's why they act "antisocial"? I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder a while ago but haven't responded to the usual therapy & now my therapist says perhaps I should be evaluated for Aspergers. But I read that most people with Asperger's aren't naturally shy, that they have few friends because their social skills aren't what's expected. That's not my problem, I have trouble talking with people to begin with since I'm so scared of them. Am I making sense? Might I still want to be evaluated? I guess it can't hurt.

Also, does autism have anything to do with seizures? My psychiatrist asked me if I suffered from seizures and when I said no he said not to bother seeing a neurologist. I've never heard of that?

I experience social anxiety. Anxiety disorders are very common in AS. It might be worth getting an assessment for AS, even if it turns out to be relatively mild, because it can lead to more suitable treatment options. It's one possible reason for your lack of treatment response.

Yes, autism is associated with seizures. Up to a third of autistics experience this.

I do :(

I struggle to answer phones and even ask for help from teachers or sales assistants in shops. I nearly always try to get someone else to do it for me. Can be very difficult becuase people don't see why I can't do it myself.

Thanks everyone! I'll find out about the neurologist option then. Though I doubt I have AS, I've read the descriptions and they just don't seem to fit. I guess it can't hurt.

I was very shy as a child. I guess you would have called me a selective mute. I talked a bit at home but very little at school. That is a part of social anxiety. Then I had severe social anxiety and almost agoraphobia just last year.
I went to a psychologist, had another disorder so my doctor put me on meds and I seem to be doing much better.

I've never had any grand mal seizures, maybe an absent seizure.

Yes. Diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety and Social Phobia.
Let me give you some context.
Anxiety never leaves me. I feel anxious ALL THE TIME, and it manifests through commonplace physical symptoms that most people associate with anxiety; increased heart rate, sweating, shortness of breath, tension, headaches and so on. The problem is that I experience these symptoms every day, in just about any situation, with people or not. I can be by myself and begin to demonstrate overt anxiety. These things happen without any recognizable trigger. That is the true criteria for the disorder. Anxiety without cause. Fear without object or concept. It is not fun :?

I think I wasn't shy when I was a little kid, but I became shy.
I have a good amount of friends, but with anyone else besides them I do feel anxious and do not relax around them even after a long time. I usually hardly speak in social situations (that aren't made up of mostly friends of mine) because I'm aware of every word and how each one might come out wrong.

I think some ASD people aren't anxious because they might not be aware of how they're coming across in social situations, or for some reason they don't care, but many do.

Autism and anxiety can co-occur quite a bit. And some autistics are more of the socially anxious/shy type than the active but socially awkward type. The thing is social skills issues are also included.

I'm diagnosed with Asperger's and also Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, and Agoraphobia. (recently it was changed to Anxiety Disorder NOS. I'm not sure why, nothings changed.. just a different person evaluating. *shrug*)

I experience anxiety anytime I am out of my comfort zone. Most of the time I am not anxious in my own house, though occasionally I can be if there is a stressful situation, or I'm upset. But as soon as I step foot outside my house, I am filled with physical symptoms of anxiety and panic. I'm not diagnosed with a social phobia, because I'm pretty much anxious about everything out there including other people. LOL

I get anxious speaking on the phone, let alone when I venture into the outside world! It has worsened recently as I don't go out as often as I used to. When I was at university, I socialised a lot and thought nothing of it. Now I seldom socialise in big groups or with the people I used to and find it increasingly difficult to do so. It's something I need to sort out really as, having been through this before, no-one else can do it for me.
