I have some very dear friends with whom I was discussing Aspergers Syndrome and one of the girls asked...

Do you prefer to be called "autistic" or "an autistic person"...

I told her that I didn't really care, I'm an aspie, I am autistic and I am an autistic person and that the most important word to ME in all of that is "person"...

But I told her I'd ask here...

So here's the Poll. how did you answer it? Please elaborate what you prefer if you don't like my poll choices.

I like just plain Autistic because I think it's obvious I'm a person, and I don't need that defined.

"I'm Autistic". Simple and to the point.

Can't they just call me by my name? Provided they remember it first...

I answered either or. I just don't want to be defined by a term such that I can be labeled as "outside" without people having to at least get to know me well enough to come to that conclusion anyway.

Aspie: person who is on the Autism Spectrum (some of us prefer not to say if we are high functioning, low functioning, aspergers, autism...).

They can call me whatever they want. People's opinions about me don't make me feel any less about myself. :D

Usually, I prefer to specify - I say "I have Asperger's Syndrome." And then, since no one knows what it is, I explain that it's a form of autism (and yes, I do say "autism").

However, when I do it the other way 'round, I say I am autistic - and then I add that the specific term is Asperger's Syndrome, if it's necessary.

What I don't like, though, is "person with autism." That's cumbersome and it doesn't change anything.

I'm autistic. Adding "person" is superfluous and unnecessary, if I were not a person it would be irrelevant what I desired to be called. Plus it sounds too much like person with autism.

Now, even though I give "autistic" as my descriptor, that doesn't mean it is all-encompassing in defining me or even the most important aspect. I am a human being, a Christian, a student, a son, a brother, and many other things. Autistic happens to be the least common of these descriptions that can apply to me, and the one that is the main focus of this site.

I don't really care, one way, or the other. It's all democracy, to me. I would care, if somebody insisted that I become cured, because I would feel offended.

I believe that the politically correct term is "person with autism" but it bugs the hell out of me.

I don't care for either.

I'll give a word a meaning - I won't let a word give me a meaning. No, really, I'm all against letting words dictate my personality.

Call me whatever you like, but just don't call me late for dinner. :P
Ah, that's an old saying.

But really, it doesn't matter much to me. I guess I would rather be known as a person with a neurobiological disorder than as a neurobiological order, honestly.
