HEALTH CARE REFORM and auts/asps
Has anyone read the new health care reform act?
I am not confortable with what it proposes for the disabled.
Let's be civil and please be resepctful because I know this ia a heated topic.
From what I read it says that those who are dual elibile with have to go into a special new catagory with a Medical Home just for them.....blah......
Medical Homes are for medical rationing and reducing referals to specialists. People on Mediaid are more likely to die from their cancer because they are not refered until too late.
THese new laws are for those who are on both Medicare and Mediciad. Further, once you are on either you will not be allowed to participlate in the health care Exchange or purchase other insurance .
So there will be no way off the system and care will be crappy.
I would like anyone elses' view on this.

Any time the government claims to want to do something for you, LOOK OUT!! ! I recently applied for Medicaid (because health insurance may become mandatory) and the state agency that handles applications reported my private health information to the department of motor vehicles, so now, not only do I not have health insurance, but I will likely lose my drivers license. As far as I am concerned, most government agencies are a bunch of oppressive, evil b*****ds.

I don't know what's planned, but I expect it to be worse than what we have now.
Right now, I have a right to privacy with my medical information, and I protect it because I know what might happen if it was open to anyone granted legal access.
Imagine the new system helping you get an AS diagnosis...then it's pretty much plastered everywhere thanks to a laundry list of "authorized" parties who can see your medical record.
Imagine if they decide to lump people with AS into groups of other "disabled" people deemed to not be worth the investment to treat properly.
Scary. Asking the government to care for me is the absolute last option in my book.
Heck, in recent years just having a "mental disorder" is enough to suspend your rights to own and possess a firearm. Never mind that they don't define what qualifies as "mental disorder" and that there doesn't have to be a realistic risk to others to deem you unfit to have a right guaranteed by the Constitution.
This varies depending on where you are, but from what I heard, it wasn't whether you have one, but whether you have been treated for one. Because, apparently, it's much safer for somebody with an untreated mental illness to have a firearm than it is for someone with a treated mental illness to have one.

Fortunate for Aspie firearms enthusiasts, then, that Asperger Syndrome is a neurological developmental disorder and not a mental one. My brain is a little different, but my mind is fine.
I am getting my info from the bill itself.
I am very concerned about the part that explains that Dual Eligibles would be forced into a special HMO.
It also states that if you have private plan and Medicaid, you cannot have both.
So those who are on public assistance simply will not be able to be OFF the govt' plan.
So those on Medicare might be OK, but the supplements for the disabled are too expensive, much more than those for the elderly.
The disabled will be blocked from freedom on every turn. Forced into an very bad HJMO.
I am citizen of another country and I am trying to see if it is possible to leave here and go there. Not my first choice, but it is hard enough to be disabled, but to be segregated and forced into programs against my will is not what I consider to be American.

I agree. I wasn't even on planning using the medicaid. I only wanted to have it to meet future government mandates. I'm not eligible for private insurance with the except of one plan that would cost over $1200 per month and would be essentially useless to me. Now, I have no insurance and will likely have no drivers license. I can truly see why people go on shooting rampages. (No, I'm not going on one or anything like it.)

This is almost similar as to what happened in Nazi Germany. They got a healthcare plan like this which paid for everything such as vacations. However, the disabled were not allowed and were sent to places like that. They were then sent to concentrations camps where they are giving lethal injections and gassed.
I have heard that Obama is anti semitic before and has friends who are as well. So it comes as to no surprise to me that Obama wants to do something this brutal to disables.
We need to rally everyone that we can and notify others not to vote for such a horrible bill.
As much as I understand human's capacity for exaggeration, I think you are assuming the absolute worst based on no evidence.
There is no indication that those who are disabled and on this medical plan will be systematically denied help, and sent to live in camps.
Perhaps it would be better to compare this health care to that of other nations like Canada, U.K. or Sweden. Those places have government run health care which takes care of disabled people, and I am pretty sure they dont have death camps.
Cyberscan, why do you believe you will lose your driver's license?
It can't be because of AS - to the best of my knowledge, there is no state in which AS is a limiting factor in driver licensing (they figure that if you can keep it together long enough to take the test, you'll be fine on the road). If there is some other medical condition that limits your driving ability, is it not for the best that this be known? For instance, if you are subject to epilepsy even with medication, is it not better that you find other transport before a seizure strikes at 60mph? (If medication controls it, then again, it's not a limiting factor, any more than treated angina is.)

I already know my conditions. I've reported them to the Dept of Health after being asked. They turn around and report them to the DMV. Not only will I be without health insurance, but I will also be without a drivers license. For my area, there is no other transport. I won't be able to take care of my personal needs without risking jail.

Tracker,
I wish you were right, but I am part Canadian and there is nothing like this there.
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=5517492&page=1
Read the above. A woman who was no longer productive was given the option to die.
Now read this:
http://www.nypost.com/seven/07242009/po ... 180941.htm
Emmanuel is renigging, but read his article in Lancet:
http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lance ... 40-6736(09)60137-9/abstract
This is only an abstract but you can get the entire Nazi like article. He believes care should go to the NON DISABLED and even then only between the ages of 15- 40.
In light of the above you can see why we would be put into special category. HMO's are known to reduce access to specialtists. Primary Care drs are not equipped to dx complicated things and in this bill, they will have an incentive to NOT refer you.
The disabled are targeted in this bill.
They are now actually. If you are on Medicare it only covers 80%. So you need a supplement. However, the supplemts for the disabled are HUGELY expensive, much more than those for the elderly. AND you still need Drug Covereage or you get fined. And if you opt out of Part B before age 65 (DISABLED) you are fined 10% for every year you do not partake.
So you could have your whole Socail Secuirty check blown on premiums if you do not choose to accept both Mediare and Medicaid, which many of us are forced into. BUT we can't get private plans because of Pre-existing conditions.
And WE are not allowed to make as much money on Medicare/Social Security as we want, unlike the elderly who are allowed to do so. Someone put pen to paper to make it so we CANNOT make more than $13,000 a year. What a a way to get off the system.
AND NOW- once we are on Medicare or Medicaid, the new law will forbid that we are allowed to purchase the health care exchanges. We are exempt, meaning that we will be stuck drinking water out of one fountain while everyone else gets another.
The disabled do not even know this. The new HMO's are NOT for our good. They will indeed be to our detriment.
We should have agitiate when it came to the harsh Mediare laws that we live under now, but we just let them go so happy that we got ramps in churches in the 1980's.
I think you are reading hyperbole of quotes taken out of context and being paranoid.
For example, in your first article, that is what was done BY A PRIVATE INURANCE COMPANY. That was not done by the government. So, if that is what your example of a bad health care system is, then you admit yourself that our current private health care sucks.
Furthermore, this option to die is referred to as hospice. Allow me to explain. At a certain point, a person's body just stops working. It could be due to cancer, or liver failure, or lung failure, or any one of a dozen different problems, but it happens to everybody eventually. Death in this manner is usually referred to as dying of old age. There are medical procedures that can be used to extend life at this point, but they are often painful, and require you to spend your last few months in a hospital bed.
Many people choose to opt out of this. They instead just take medicine to manage the pain and spend their remaining time with their families. They may only live for 4 months instead of 6, but they will spend it enjoying life with loved ones rather then lying in pain in the hospital.
Under the bill being considered, hospice will be offered AS A COMPLETELY VOLUNTARY option. They will not force it on you, they will merely give you the option if you wish to take it. When I reach that age I am personally going to chose the hospice route because I dont want to spend my last few months of life in pain being a drain on society. Now if you do, that is your choice, you WILL NOT be forced into it.
Furthermore, as for the Nazi propaganda you referred to:
The man in that article was merely expressing his opinion that doctors shouldn't order dozens of expensive and unnecessary tests. For example, you dont need an MRI or a CAT scan to determine if the leg is broken, a X-ray will work fine and is much cheaper. He wasn't saying that disabled people dont deserve care. The article took his words completely out of context, and added their own meaning to them. You can do it with anybody. Just look at their article when they say:
Translation: Don't give much care to a grandmother with Parkinson's or a child with cerebral palsy.
I may be radical in my opinions here, but I believe that people are capable of saying what they mean and dont require any translations like this.
As for your complaints about the current system: this is exactly what the health care bill is trying to fix. If you think the current system sucks, your not alone. That is why there is a plan being developed to fix these problems. Your argument against a new legislation shouldn't be 'our current system suck, but dont change it!'
I have no objection if you wish to debate the bill based on what it says, but paranoid hyperbole of quotes taken out of context, and referring to poor practices with our current method of private insurance does not in any way make a good argument against the proposed system.

Government agencies love sharing peoples' information with each other. You can bet there will be no exception when it comes to government sponsored healthcare. For the sake of argument let's say that I'm epileptic and that the medication I take no longer works. I experience a seizure. I want to go to the doctor to have my medication changed, but I'm afraid to do so because I know I will be reported to the DMV and my drivers license will be suspended for a year. Instead of going to the doctor to get an effective medication, I decide to retain the ability to go to work and pay my mortgage. This is the choice that I would have to make if I were to fall under the government system.
Under the current system, I pay a $100 doctor's fee and about $100 for a different medication. The transaction remains between my doctor and myself. The medication prevents further seizure activity, and I am able to safely drive. I really don't trust government agencies with my medical information. My trust has been betrayed before, and I know it will be again.

So Big Government is evil, but trusting private informations to avaricious for-profit insurance companies the way we do now is just fine and dandy? I don't get that view. Under the current system, people don't even have full choice over which doctors they choose to see, and people who have any kind of health problem still have to pay a fortune.
IMHO, autistic people as a group are hurt by a system which ties employment to insurance. Many of us are unemployed or underemployed. And, for all of you who are paranoid about the government snooping into your medical files...are you okay with insurance companies, provided through your employer, potentially having access to this information? In fact, health insurance costs cause people with any kind of disability to be discriminated against in terms of employment.
