It's a kind of "Tunnel Vision" I think I do this while learning to drive I focus on what's in front of me NOT what's around me etc. When I first typed in tunnel vision I was shocked to find an article link to Autism and thought WOW maybe that's what I'm doing!!

I think it all depends on what you train yourself to “tune in to”. I have myself trained to tune in to any kind of movement. I stare straight ahead and immediately notice even the slightest movement. As long as something is moving within my direct or peripheral vision it is noticed and since anything on the road from people to vehicles is usually moving I do a good job of driving.

Have you seen the basketball/gorilla cognition experiment video?

http://viscog.beckman.illinois.edu/flashmovie/15.php

They showed this to my NT rugby team (people used to sorting out a lot of visual information at once). Nobody was ably to count the number of bounces and see the gorilla both. The people who saw the gorilla got the count wrong, and none of the people who got the count right saw the gorilla. I've watched it several times, and even though I know the gorilla will walk through, I don't see it if I'm counting the dribbles.

So we're not the only ones with tunnel vision. But I think we have less sensory bandwidth, so we screen out more. I certainly do. A lot of times the other info is recorded, and my brain plays it back on fast-forward after I'm done focussing, and I can answer the questions people asked while I was 'away'.

Yes, exactly and precisely, that's what I do. And as for parents testing the child's hearing, Mom was still testing mine when I was in my 20's.

I am also like this, That is why my mom won't let me drive, I don't really want to drive anyway, I don't have a interest in driving, but my mom says that the reason she won't let me drive yet, is because I am not aware of the things around me.
