I keep thinking I'm reading a searched post and wondering why I searched the word "shoes" or whatever.

No. Advertisements don't belong in forum posts.

No. I can live with the ads around the edge of of the forum - on top, below, wherever. But I am very much against ads that change the text of the posts.

I'd say no, but that requires that Alex has another way of getting money for the site. It's only logic that he needs ads in order to make it go around. I do find it frustrating, and would rather see some other kind of ads.

(I'm new on WP. Alex is the owner, right?)

Some pages are full of them and it's designed to trick people into inadvertently clicking on them. I think it's downright sneaky and dishonest.

Yes, he's the owner.

In the past he's asked for donations. Some members have said they'd much rather donate than have to look at ads. (Of course, a few have been quite offended that he's asking for donations at all.) I suggest that we ask Alex for a reasonable number of how much he needs to keep this site operational without ads, and then do what we can to help.

(Alex, are you out there? I'm serious about this.)

That way those who are offended by the ads are taking matters into our own hands to solve the problem, instead of hoping our complaints make enough of a difference to be listened to.

I'm trying to convince him to develop a different model for the site rather than having five ads on every page.

There was a donate page, but I can't find the link. I think people would be willing to donate if there were a *reasonable* level of ads that isn't over-the-top like it is now and they could actually see the link, and maybe get something out of it (e.g. no ads).

It's really bugging me because I'm taking time that I could be getting paid to redesign the site, and I'm really not getting anything out of it. This is a site that Alex and I started to help other people, and unquestionably it still is, but an uninformed glance would easily convey the impression that instead, it's something foremost to make money/profit, which it isn't, or at least it shouldn't be.

That's the way I can live with it too, given that Alex needs either income or other support to keep the site here.

I'll back you on this, but back Alex on helping with the cost of the site.

See "Announcement: [ Poll ] A way to financially support WP"
the first thread in the general folder in the forums

The URL is there, as well as considerable feedback and discussion.

The advertisements at the top, on the left, and the bottom are just annoying. However, the green links in people's posts is almost morally wrong. I think it gravely exploits the members of WP.

Well, I've removed them from all the forum posts.
