Does anyone else here find that they don't mind speaking in front of a large audience (particularly if it's from a self-prepared script), but that they can't stand "mingling" and socialising afterwards?

I've given guest lectures at our community college. I don't mind people asking questions while seated, but mingling is not my cup of tea.

I have no problem getting up in front of crowds large or small to give presentations. In fact, one of my presentations has been posted to WrongPlanet's website, http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt70539.html.

Definitely. I can relate to what you're saying. I've given speeches in front of 10,000 plus people but don't do well with aftermath chatter/praise, b/c I can't control the aftermath like I can the speech.

Yes, speeches are much easier. Sure, I get the usual nerves; but there's just much less to think about giving a prepared speech than having to stay constantly on your toes like you do in a back-and-forth conversation.

Not far from the maddening crowd topic

I was petrified to talk in front of a classroom of students when I was a kid, as this gave them an opportunity to tease me by sticking out their tongues, mouthing silent obscenities and making chair noises. When they sensed my fear and shame it only made things worse on the way home from school. What a nightmare!

But as an adult, I have more confidence to do a monologue of a special interest (a prepared speech) in front of a crowd unknown to me. I believe in what I am saying and people (mostly) want to hear what I am talking about. And I am prepared to defend myself if I am booed, as I am used to negative reactions. :)

Yes, this is definitely me...and the bigger the crowd, the more comfortable I feel.

Also, if people are being rude, ignoring me, and all chatting amongst themselves, I start to get nervous and start screwing up.

No idea what's up with that :?
