I went to obtain my Drivers licence last week and they said i need to get a psych eval to drive. Ive taken the paper to 4 docs so far and none of them would even sign it. Nobody wants me to drive either, but i need to drive because there is no bus that comes by my house. Would you let someone with McDD drive? if you dont know what it is check here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_c ... l_disorder

I've never heard of McDD.
Do you believe that you have it?
Do you believe that it will effect your ability to drive?

I personally would not advocate preventing someone from driving based on a diagnosis alone unless it was something like untreated epilepsy. I don't know you so I don't know what your symptoms are so I can't say if you in particular should drive or not. Are you bein too honest with the doctors and DMV about your symptoms? Maybe rehearse what to say with someone before you go to a doctor appointment?

My last psychistrist said i have mcdd. I have several other dx's but mcdd clumps them all into one catergory so its easier to explain my hodgepog of symptoms. i have to get a psych eval because i lost my previous licence due to reckless driving. I know my driving is impaired but im not sure to what extent.

If you have a history of reckless driving, you probably should not drive, independently of McDD.

On another note, McDD reminds me of McDonalds every time I see it

Was the reckless driving relevant to the McDD, or to being immature?

In what way is your driving impaired?
What do the doctors think you will do that I wouldn't do?

i was just wondering what other peoples inputs were. My reckless driving was due to impulsivity. i also dont pay attention. I agree though 2 people might have the same dx and one might not be impared driving and the other person might. esp, with mcdd which has a broad range of symptoms that are kind of vague. I guess this is a stupid post. i dont even know why i posted it.

If there was an effective treatment for it, yes, I would, just as I would give it to someone with ADHD who controlled theirs with drugs.

If not, no...

I have no problem with it  As long as you aren't making left-hand turns at un-signaled intersections while talking on cellphone and changing diapers at the same time.

I don't drive for several reasons one of them is my severe anxiety and my hallucinations seem to be the worst while being in a car (as a passenger of course), and I used to have catatonic like symptoms. I believe I have McDD because I have both autism and so called "psychotic" symptoms. I also have bipolar. I developed most of the symptoms when I was young but not a confirmed psychotic break (one diagnosed by doctors and requiring hospitalization) until 13 even though I am pretty sure I had it before then.

If 4 doctors have said no I think you should just accept it. Be thankful for little things like having your physical health, I mean if public transport is a problem, there are more commuter friendly cities.

My worry is more the harm you could do to another. I myself was hit, as a pedestrian, by a driver who shouldn't have been driving. I was in a coma for 5 days. I was 15. My Dx was traumatic brain injury, traumatic brain stem injury, traumatic head injury and basilar skull fracture. I couldn't walk, talk, read or write. I went from the high school honor roll to special education. It took years to recover and I was never fully myself again.

Not driving is not the end of the world. I lived in downtown SF for a year and never needed a car and thought it was great. If there's a chance you could harm someone else, just don't do it.

I remember years ago going to a wedding, I had 2 glasses of wine, maybe 3. When I drove home I was a little buzzed and it was a thunderstorm. I thought, I could kill someone, so I pulled off and parked at a 7-11, got a coffee and just sat in my car for a couple hours before continuing home. I don't know what else to say.

In that case the psych should make the judgment based on the risk of you driving recklessly again. While I understand that the emotional regulation problems that go with McDD could increase the risk of reckless driving, the diagnosis by itself doesn't determine that risk (heck there are so many people without psych labels who drive recklessly and don't get caught and/or get a minor penalty). However, I know from a psych patient I know (I myself dont'drive due to blindness) that shrinks can be rude and judgmental regarding these matters.

For some reason, McDD is making me think of a DD sized bust. Which I guess could get in the way a bit while driving.... :)
