For nearly 2 years I was working at a library. A perfect job for an aspie. I was let go because of complications with my contracted hours. I have applying for jobs and have horrible interview skills because I get nervous and I don't make eye contact like I should. I loved working at the library. I felt relaxed and fairly confident with my work. Now I am working a seasonal job at a retail establishment. This job makes me anxious and I am becoming irritated my the constant criticisms about not packaging something correctly and not approaching people. I lost hours to a constantly chirpy, over friendly woman who overwhelms me and who the owner loves. I am sick of feeling like I am an outsider and a complete weirdo . I am friendly and I assist as much as I can but I am becoming frustrated with myself and people not understanding. I wish I could get tested so I can apologize to people and allow them to have more patience with me as I try and come to terms with not being a normal warm blooded human being.

I have no health insurance and I don't know where to begin. How does a person in the USA get tested? By a physician?

:?

Actually, rather than getting an official Dx right now I think you should focus on finding a job more suited to you. An official Dx isn't going to help you much in the retail field.

I suggest you find a good therapist who can help you with learning how to do a good interview, maybe through some role-playing and cognitive therapy, thinking about some of the variables that may come up and preparing ahead for them.

A therapist can also help you with the physical presentation... what your body language may be conveying to the interviewer. They may also be able to help you find resources for discovering more suitable jobs.

And a good one is just a very nice support in the day to day life out there in the hurley-burley world.

I got my diagnosis when I was applying for Social Security Disability because of epilepsy. I didn't get it but as part of the process they send you to a psychologist. When he suggested it I called my neurologist who called back and left a message saying she'd suspected Aspergers.

Some places do sliding fees so that may help financially.
