I don't know what it is, but for some reason babies in public are always giving me strange looks. They're never happy or upset, just watching me. I was wondering if it could have something to do with babies, who are watching the world closely and learning as much as they can about social behavior, pick up on my unusual body language and fidgety stimming. Anybody else experience the same thing, or is it just me?

You might be onto something there.
Who knows, maybe they are subconsciously checking out visual cues and non-verbal patterns in different people's behavior.

My own 16-month daughter does it to me sometimes ; especially when I'm trying to be funny, she looks at me as if to say "oh Pap you are so embarrassing". But then NTs get that too.

I have this happen with babies and small children. I am not a fan of either. I also wonder if maybe we interact with them differently. Most people see a baby and immediately invade its space, making stupid noises, and touching it. I often find myself simply staring back at them, hoping they won't touch me. I seem to get one of two reactions. They either get scared or seem even more interested in me than anyone else.

It is a curious thing to be sure.

I get that sometimes in public but I think I have a very unique look to me anyway. I work with children though and it doesn't happen then, they're all the same with me as a caregiver.

Oh actually, one thing children do pick up is how quiet I am. I've had children as young as toddlers come up to me and ask me why I'm so quiet. That was in public licensed daycare though, I'm louder at home. lol

I think small children look up at anybody, through fascination. Remember, they're learning social cues, they're not going to be social experts yet. I had a random baby look at me from a pushchair the other day, then she smiled as though she wanted to play. I smiled back, then walked away. Also once on the bus I had a baby (looked about 6 months) looked at me then point her finger excitedly and laugh quietly, as though I looked ''fun'' and she really wanted me to play with her. I don't know why little ones like me so much because I'm not so keen on small children.

They're definitely doing this. They just seem to give me an inordinate amount of attention.

Of course they check out everyone some, but even you admit that they seem to be more interested in you than others.

If they really are picking up on our weird body language, I'm glad I tend to give them an awkward, unexpressive stare until their eyes are wide xd. I want to make babies more comfortable with things out of the ordinary. `-`

Don't take it like that. Babies don't judge. If it's stressful, make a point of waving or winking or something. Teach babies to associate unusual body language with nice people. Identifying something like this, especially in a more serious way than WP consensus, could be a significant step in working against aspie discrimination based on odd behavior.

Children and especially babies absolutely love me and treat me like a rock star. Usually when I'm out like at the Grocery store 90% of them will light right up, stare at me until I'm out of sight, give me a big smile and usually point directly at me until their mom or dad acknowledges what they are pointing at. I was surprised the first hundred times it happened too! Most people think it's cute but occasionally I get a dirty look like I'm some sort of weirdo for waving at a child that's looking right at me and smiling. Oh well can't please everyone.

Just wish the ladies my own age had that type of attraction to me. You would think a single guy who is a kid (and animal) magnet would be a good catch but apparently not.

No I meant in the way ''if babies can sense unusual body language then what the hell can adults sense in me?'' type of case. I didn't even think I gave off such unusual behaviour, compared to what some Autistics have wrote here on various threads.

Pshh. Adults pick up way less than babies. Babies still have incredible brain plasticity and nothing on their minds and no preconceptions and basically nothing to do but absorb like adorable information databases. That's why they do look at us funny: they are learning what our odd behaviors mean. Adults have learned that most aspie behavior could mean plenty and don't bother to check strangers out too closely. That's why we have to be nice to them: so they learn to associate small aspie traits with good things before they grow old enough to dismiss them. We can also help change the perception that adult men who like and are good with kids are all creepy pedo types. >_> Pet peeve of mine.

Most times when they do look, it's like they think I've ruined a Christmas Dinner by peeing on the turkey.
Apart for the ones that are family members, generally they are/were fine with me as they smile and such and don't see me as odd, well not yet mind most of us are odd anyway. XD

I've never really noticed babies staring at me, they never seem to be looking at anything because their eyes are so vacant and unfocused. Or maybe it's because I keep a good distance from them if I can, as they are known to suddenly fire something horrible from their mouths at least five feet away.

I seem to be like a cat to small children. They see me and just want to crawl all over me and grope and tug and pull and not realize I don't enjoy it. The only difference is that I can't slash them with my claws and then dive under the couch. :cat:

Little kids always give me strange looks and stare at me, too. It might sound bad to some, but I really don't like kids. I can't ignore their screaming and crying in public like most people can. I think I go around with a mad look on my face when it's really just my normal expression. Maybe that scares them.

There's one exception to this - my cousin's adorable 4 year old daughter. They live out of state, so it's a big deal when they come to visit. Fallon is fine around me, and I enjoy playing with her because she's exceptionally intelligent and creative for her age. My cousin insists that I'm wonderful with children, but I know this is only true with Fallon.

not really strange looks, but they do seem to pay attention to me more then the person next to me.

I usually wave at them.
