My psychologist said; "People with AS can have mental problems, but only >BEFORE< they get diagnosed!

What's your opinion on this?

Just to put one thing up, my psychologist has almost NO education, he has read about AS, but he did terrible in school, so maybe that explains his nonsense.

No wonder it didn't make any sense.

Do you know what s/he meant by "mental problems"?

Maybe s/he was talking about certain thoughts or feelings that might not be so bad after a diagnosis explains things.

My thoughts exactly leejosepho. She may well be referring to your feelings before diagnosis and the relief after diagnosis. I do not think she means that you cannot get any other mental problems afterwards.

+1

I always knew I was weird and different, but I was terrified about confiding my "symptoms" to any "doctor" lest I be shipped off to the funny farm. Now that I know about AS, I not only understand myself better, but my "fears" have largely evaporated over why I think the way I do.

I must have been a basket case on the verge of going over the edge before I knew about AS.

Thats the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard a MH professional make. Its just not even logical.

Being diagnosed has led to some insights but it hasn't changed my overall mental state in any significant way. Diagnosis certainly hasn't done anything to change the frustrations I encounter as a result of the disorder (if anything its made me more poignantly aware of them and their hopeless inevitability, in that they're just going to keep happening until I die), therefore being diagnosed has done nothing to alleviate my depression and may sometimes make it worse. What a w*ker.

I'd have thought that he was probably referring to all the problems people are will think they have before learning that AS explains their symptoms.
I mean, he's wrong, because there certainly are plenty of comorbid conditions.. but usually not as many as you thought you had before finding out that you have AS.

Well, 1 in around 100-150 people have AS, so that means that there IS a low chance that the individual with AS may have an added mental issue.

Probably somewhat higher than in the general population.. as it was pointed out in the AS vs. C-PTSD thread, growing up with an ASD can constitute trauma almost on its own.. Plus having any disorder that gets you into a shrinks office increases the chance that other things will be diagnosed.

I really hope he isn't your stereotypical psychologist, uneducated and all, he evern says that he knows how it is to have AS, when he doesn't freaking have it!!

You DON'T KNOW HOW IT IS TO HAVE AS unless you're born with it!! !
