I am already approved. Have been since September apparently. They've been playing phone tag with me, and we with them. Never getting ANYONE to answer the phone. But last Friday we went to the office to talk to a woman that said I would get my funds today, Friday Dec. 4. I have NOT gotten one cent in the bank. I've had to have a payee, by the way. My husband, who works. Anyway, I feel we were lied to. How long is it supposed to be before I get my first check? I am fuming with so much anger here. I've had to sell my Xbox 360 to get money! And right now, I just wanna be playing on it, blowing stuff up in Fallout 3!

Maybe they've mailed a check? I don't know.. they like to make it as difficult as possible. I've wondered if the goal might be to get people to kill themselves so that they don't have to pay the disability at all.

OK she said NEXT Friday, which to me sounded like a WEEK! Not TWO weeks. Does this sound right?

And I already have such CONTEMPT, such LOATHE, for the entire human race. So, yeah, if they drive me stir-crazy, I'm taking my revenge with my Alien Blaster Firelance from Fallout 3!!

And they better not have mailed a check. I don't TRUST the MORONS at our building. We GAVE them a bank account and routing number. Or did these human sheep look at those numbers like a bunch of pre-schoolers, who have no concept of FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS!! !!

I can't remember exactly how long it was, but I think it took a good 6 months to get my first deposit. SSA is slower than molasses about things. I sent in paperwork 3 times and finally had to go to the office to cancel medicaid, so that process only took 4 months and I still haven't received a refund for the deductions.

good news is the first payment will include all the months retroactive to the date of disability (which for me was 6 months after I lost my job and was deemed unemployable).

Well that's fun... Not! I FIRST APPLIED literally in 2004. In August of this year I applied a THIRD TIME! Six months? They are looking to fork over a WHEELBARROW of money to me then.

Come on. It CAN'T take THAT long!

The following is the schedule in which I applied for this year.

August I applied.
Approved in September apparently.
It's DECEMBER!
FIVE MONTHS already!
When is the madness going to end?

AND, by the way, I qualified for BOTH SSI AND SSDI!

 It is government, inherently slow.

I was awarded, after appeal, SSD in March.

Took about 60 days for the money to start coming.
Somewhere along the way they sent me a letter saying it would start on X date.
My bank sent a note saying they'd gotten the word from SSD that deposits would start.

Yes, it they have your routing number they will do direct deposit.

I had a "back pay" settlement awarded at the March hearing - it arrived in August.

Again, It is government, inherently slow.

In contrast my first payment did not, monthly started in April, back pay hit in August.

 just had a thought - if you are in a major metropolitan area the great number of SocSec cases versus the limited number of caseworkers will really slow things down.

Sadly, you are dealing with a government beurocracy that cares neither for paying out money or really helping people.

Why else do you think that even people with clear and obvious disabilities are frequently only approved after going through an appeal process?

The government is always slow.

Yeah. Mentally add another 50% to whatever time they give you. So if they say two weeks, think three; if they say five days, think seven or eight. And so on. They also don't count weekends or holidays.

Seriously, just get yourself to the nearest public library and pick out some music or books or whatever you happen to like. Nothing that you feel like you have to read to improve yourself; I'm talking cheap, entertaining books that you'll forget after you put them down. Step AWAY from the classics section. Just keep yourself entertained; you'll stop being so furious after a while. Bonus, public libraries are a government service so at least you know they're doing some good.

And libraries don't have Xbox 360s to get my pent-up frustrations out. Books are great for when you wanna calm down, but I don't feel like calming down a lot of times. And now I don't have my Xbox 360. Imagine my walls now looking like swiss cheese!

You can download emulators and games for old consoles. All you need is a PC with internet access.

See my retro-gaming thread for more info:

Oooh, yes! And many of the games are freeware now, too, especially the ones more than ten years old.

My significant other has that covered. He plays on the emulator. Me, I prefer my old 360. I still have my regular Xbox (thank goodness), and have gotten back into play KOTOR.
