Hey everyone,

I have been reading a lot on these forums and have only posted a couple of times.
Ever since I was small I have had issues with social interactions, focusing my attention and routines. (I have a more complete list of my feelings towards scarves, round necked sweaters, food schedule etc in another thread) I wrote to the National Autistic Society (UK) and they responded with information about diagnosis.
They suggested to take an online AQ test, and see where that took me, and speak with my GP.
Now, I don't like to see my doctor at the best of times since he's always busy and I'm not sure what I'd say in a situation like this. I don't want him to just say 'Ah, don't worry about it, just carry on' because I'm currently filling in job application forms and requests for grant money for my research and I need to know if I can apply for specific grants depending on if I have a recognised disability.

Well, I took the wired AQ test (in the sticky at the top of this section) and scored a 47 I'm assuming that this is quite a high score, then took the EIQ and scored a 57 which seems a low score in this case.

Now, this has got me a bit concerned. I know that I should go to see my doctor, but on the other hand I don't want to be left there going in and 'wasting' his time. This has got me a bit upset and I could do with some advice from you guys out there.

Thanks for any support you can help me with,

Also, while I'm at it, why is this called forum3 in the address bar if it is the top one on the main forum display screen?

Presumably, this is the internal forum ID, the order in which these forums were created. Forum 1i is computers, and forum 2 is video games. I guess that shows you where Alex's interests lie! :)

Basically, it depends on how you feel about your situation. If you perceive yourself to possibly need the help, and an AS/HFA dx would give you access to that help, then go ahead with it.

I would suggest getting a referral from the GP, though, as he probably will not be qualified to make a diagnosis. Don't worry about wasting anyone's time. It's what they're there for. They may act otherwise, but it's your life and you have a right to do what you feel you need to in order to function to the best of your ability - bring up your suspicions, the National Autism Society, the tests, and the manner in which AS may be affecting your life. Write list before you go, if you are worried about what to say.

If he does tell you that you've wasted his time, contact the National Autism Society again, as they seem to be more than happy to offer advice. :) They may be able to refer elsewhere.

Thanks for that response.

The thing is that if I do get a dx then I should probably put it on my job/research grant application forms since any potential employer should know about it before looking at me.

I've got an appointment with the doctor to go see him, and now I've just got to write stuff down to talk with him since I really don't like to talk with him. I'd rather take someone who does the talking for me (as has happened before when I had meningitis) but I don't know if my friends would come to do this. I mean, it's a little bit strange that someone grown up can't even talk to their doctor :(

Anyway, enjoy the weekend and the Geminid meteor shower 8)

I had an IQ test once while in the booby hatch at nine years old. It came back 73.4. They never explained what it was or what they wanted from me. I rember doing meaningless task such as putting pegs in a board and drawing stupid pictures of lines and circles. IQ tests with autistic people are a joke.

I quite often go to serious appointments with someone else these days - I find it's better that way. Firstly, if I get stuck explaining myself, or I forget to mention something, then the other person can help. Secondly, the doctors (or whoever) tend to behave better toward me when they know someone else is watching!

It makes life a lot easier for me.
