I'm having a hard time tracking everybody down that I mentioned this to, so I need to make one big public post.

A week ago, my parents made a joke about me hanging out on the internet with people that go on shootouts. I later expressed my annoyance about that, and they further explained that by not at least notifying law enforment that something was wrong somewhere, Alex did not handle the matter with integrity, since law enforcment could have filled in the missing pieces. Normally I don't take my parents seriously on stuff like this, but I think they have a point this time. WP is still a large part of the AS community, but it is past it's prime and lacking strength of character to maintain it's influence or even be benificial to the ASD community much longer. I won't be around as much and will probably eventually disappear altogether.

I'm right behind you but without a gun.

I think that if WP notified someone that someone on here was possibly dangerous they'd have been too invasive, and if they adopt that policy now, they will become too invasive and people will leave on that basis. It is really terrible that someone killed someone else, but for the vast rest of the time WP's non-invasive policy has caused no harm. I think it is unreasonable to jump up the security on the basis of one incident.

I don't think that WrongPlanet should be judged merely upon one incident. The internet is such a huge place; it could easily have happened anywhere else, and I don't think that all of WP will be judged based upon that. I think a lot of good things are happening at WrongPlanet, like aspies being able to hang out with other aspies on the internet, and to be able to fit into a group, and bad things could happen sometimes. But as a result I think that things should move on, eventhough we might remember what happened.

Sean,

You have a good point but must be careful on your assumptions.

Once authorities were contacted based on what a member posted. Granted, it is very, very rare of us to do that. People come here to vent, to talk, to say things they might not mean and to say things they mean with all their heart. I made the decision to contact an outsider. I gave it much thought and discussed it with others here before I did so. It was not done lightly.

Just because you don't see action doesn't mean action has not been taken.

Again, I want to stress how very very rare this action is. I think, in this case, it was an okay decision. The person involved got the help they needed and contacted me later via PM. They were not mad or upset, given the unusual situation they were in.

Here's a worthy piece of advice. Don't tell your parents you use WrongPlanet, and don't let them see it on your screen. I always keep a train site open in the second window; my parents know I like trains, and feel OK about it. So when I hear them opening the door to my room, I quickly switch to a train site. So when they walk in, all they see are photos of North Shore Line locomotives. Works every time.

redvelvet,

Before you joined, there was a young man who posted here a bit, not a lot. He made some vague comments about feeling like killing others. He made some firm posts that he was suicidal and would kill himself before Halloween 2005. He also made some equally firm posts about every day plans for after fall and winter 2005.

If he had not killed himself, not shot and killed others, a day or two before Halloween, his normal posts would have been remembered and his others blown off as rants.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

BeeBee that is so sad, I read your reply three times before it completely registered, You moderators have a hard time, I'll try to be more courtous in future.
What a waste of a life,
So this person did kill themselves. and others.
and you also helped another person get the help they needed.
have I understood this correctly?

BeeBee you did the right thing in reporting it. It's good to know we have responsible moderators here.

Yes, you have read that right.

It was very, very sad.

I'm really happy about how the other case turned out though. She just needed a rest from the world and a med change.

BeeBee

thank goodness for that, I mean the med change and an escape from the world for a bit.
I had to ask if I had it right. Shame about the young man though.
That was brave to report the woman BeeBee, and you helped her.
It's good to know that there are people like you here to help when help is needed even if we don't always know we need it.
I have read that depression is very common with Aspies, I know from experience with my lot that this is true, but many Aspies only have themselves and this site, so they need someone looking out for them. A bit like having a gaurdian angel. thanks. :D
I'm not saying that privacy should be done away with, what i am saying is thats it's good to know we have someone like BeeBee and the other mods, who's job it is to make sure we are all safe,
a bit like that bloke who wanted to meet Aspies and do a show or something about Aspies. Alex confirmed to the best of his ability that it was safe and the bloke was genuine. So we know that the site is looking out for the safety of all it's members, even from ourselves if need be.
