...how it is to be a "slow learner"...I just want to see if i am one because people call me ret*d despite not feeling my self any slow, despite not having stupid questions like others and despite getting some better grades than others without even trying hard...

I will never forget a day in the classroom when there was an exercise and i got "B"

..and i listened to the girls behind me who got worse grades than me saying"He got "B""...

Imagine a person with mental retardation getting better grades,WITHOUT EVEN TRYING,than some people with normal iq and getting 100/100 at a math exam while the other normal iq'ers got from 60-90...

there is no other explanation...its either the iq test of the army or i have been wrongly diagnosed as a child....

Theres a huge difference between being a 'slow learner' and 'ret*d'. I am quite a slow learner but when I do pick something up, I never forget it. I had the same situation at my school when I was 14 where in a music lesson I was playing a guitar riff over and over and my class 'mates' were laughing at me and saying 'can't you play anything else you ret*d?'

They weren't laughing when the teacher announced that I had the highest score in the class!

People refer to autistics as ret*d because of our social ineptitude. It's not a matter of how smart you are, it's a matter of how smart people perceive you are. Likely they see your academic abilites and they focus on your social ineptitude.

the thing is ''slow learners'' used to be ''borderline MR''

my english(foreign language)was always excellent not to mention almost perfect, excellent at PC's,good/very good at Maths,ok/mediocre/fine at advanced maths, very good at physics and chemistry,good/very good to slightly excellent at greek,excellent/almost perfect at theoretical thinking, very good/excellent at economics...i don't feel a slow learner at all but i am considered one thats what i am in the papers -either diagnosed as a child or in army-....

how can i get excellent grades WITHOUT EVEN TRYING(in caps and in bold to highlight the argument that someone with lower iq can achieve more from someone with higher iq because of motivation),not having stupid questions, not feeling slow at all...

what is going wrong??

Have you thought about getting retested? I think it's generally agreed upon that IQ tests are insufficient in assessing one's true abilities. I think you are a good example of this.

yeah i am gonna ask my psychologist to do the wais iv in one month just to see my power

not to mention i did the wais iii in the summer and he told me i scored 108 and i also did the iqtest.dk at the internet(the same i did in the army but i did it 2 and and half years after,i didn't remembered answers so you won't call me cheater-i was sleep deprived when i did it in the army-and i scored 108)

also how can i get 100/100 in a maths exam studying only a bit before i went to the exam while others got s**t grades and others good grades in the 80's and in the 90's while me the slow one got this grade....

and i also remember one time i studied only for 30-45 minutes the night before on an exam and i got 88 on the exam and the teacher said "the suprise" and i felt like i didn't even tried hard to get this grade and i saw that he wrote me "well done!"and i was seeing it with a blank face thinking"is that supposed to make me happy??"

my big questionmark is how slow is someone with an iq of lets say 81

..and i remember one time one girl called me ret*d(without even knowing anything about psychology-technically ret*d is an iq below 70 not 85 RIGHT NOW and even my psychologist said to me that it doesn't matter what the cutoff used to be but what it is now..)

But anyway yesterday while i was in bed i thought "BETTER BEING ret*d WITH KINDNESS AND A GOOD HEART THAN BEING EITHER A BASTARD OR A WHORE OR A SLUT..."..Do you agree???

Well, I'm guessing she didn't mean ret*d in a clinical way. But you're right, there are plenty of people who have very quick brains but no heart. I got into an argument with this guy years ago about a program we both had seen on tv and were discussing. There was a man who was so physically incapacitated they didn't know how much cognitive function he had. His wife took care of him ( bathing, feeding etc) and she talked baby talk to him. I just commented how awful it must be for the man if his mind was still intact but he was unable to communicate. Like Stephen Hawkins would be before technology allowed him to communicate. This guy told me it was right to treat him like a baby and his reasoning was " I'm smarter than you". Which was technically true, he is in the top 3% and I am in the top 5%. But his conclusion was still wrong. I was so mad I couldn't talk but if I could have turned back time I would have said "I don't care how fast your modem is, garbage in is still garbage out!"

Hello Chief,

You may want to watch the R word. Many people find it offensive. Only saying something in case you hadn't considered it.

There are many types of intelligence. Many people on the spectrum score very high in some areas and very low in others. This is the case for me. On some of the sub tests I scored very high, on some I scored a little above intellectually disabled, and my processing speed is below average. I'm gifted and learning disabled. Visual processing issues in the form of not being able to see any images in my mind's eye is the disability part. I was in classes for learning disabilities as a child. The things my brain is good at doing compensate for things I have difficulties with. It just took me a while to learn how to effectively use my lopsided brain. Now that I got the controls down, I'm having allot more fun with it.

There are different kinds of intelligence. I've learned that often the same person can say you're intelligent and ask you questions about things one minute, and then treat you like a child the next minute just because you're slow to pick up what people are expecting of you.

Slow learning is NOT the same as suffering from retardation.

Some people are slow because they have a hard time taking things in, but once they do, they can handle lots of information and do really well at whatever it is they're learning.

Why would people get offended by that word if the person only used it on themselves or were talking about that's what people called them?

sometimes i find the same words offensive sometimes not
it depends on the context
i would never call a mentally ret*d man ''ret*d'' as an insult as i would never call someone who is in a wheelchair and can't walk crip or gimp(κουτσος in greek i think i am not sure but thats the word i say and it is very offensive calling someone in the wheelchair κουτσο)

I zoomed in on the word and missed the context a bit. Sorry about that.

I hope the rest of my post was helpful Chief. Even the most intellectually gifted person is capable of doing things that would be characterized as stupid. Someone who's IQ scores are in the Intellectually Disabled range is capable doing things someone with a higher IQ couldn't. I don't mind having an uneven brain. It can be a source of pride and be quite humbling at the same time.

Don't worry about the score too much. It's really not an accurate measure of your true potential.

Look at it, this way. I'm the slowest member of my original imediate family of four. I didn't even get to take regular college courses. I'm also the smartest person in my family. I took the most accurate online IQ test that there is, three months ago, and found out that my IQ is 136.

the point about the word 'ret*d' is not what it means but what using the term conveys. Terms like 'short bus' 'window licker' with 'ret*d' in that way is definately NOT welcome in WrongPlanet.net.
