I make noise when I eat
I've been told I make a lot of noise when I eat. Only two people did: my mom, and a guy who may have been interested in me. He said that along with many hateful comments about myself, because he thought I got on his nerves. Now I'm very self-conscious. I asked a good friend today, and she said I do make noise but she doesn't care and she's still my friend. Now I'm very self-conscious, because no one else has said that to me, but apparently it's very noticeable. I'm trying not to make noise, but I can't eat. I've always had trouble eating. First I didn't know how to chew food, so I swallowed everything that was put in my mouth. Then I developed a very strong gag reflex and started having a lot of trouble swallowing. Eating is hard and I eat very slowly. I know that making noise while eating is considered bad manners, but because of those other issues, I was wondering if this could be autism-related, and if other people have or have had the same problem and how they cope. Please help! I was feeling better about social situations, but now I'm all anxious again.

Hey, I eat very slowly too no idea why tho. Can you keep your mouth closed while you chew? Doing that should cut out all the noise. If you can't do it straight away I think it should be very possible after practicing for a week or two, maybe ask your parents or whover you eat with to remind you when they hear it as you might forget to begin with.
This isn't just an ASD thing btw I've known a few NTs who were completely unaware of how noisily they ate.

Thank you for responding! I feel much better now. I do eat with my mouth closed. Apparently the noise I make is like a sucking noise, something I do with my tongue. When I try to stop it I eat even slower and can't enjoy my food. I've heard something about making noise being socially accepted by some Asian cultures, as a way to show your enjoyment for the food. I don't know if that's true or not, but it made me wish things were similar in the West. I'll keep practicing though. Thank you for your encouragement.
