Typical misunderstanding during diagnosis
Hi all,
New to the forum so i thought i'd post one of my typical moments that happened on friday during my diagnostic assessment. Obviously it was all pretty hard work and i will focusing really hard on all the information i was being given and trying to think about the meaning behind what he was saying and break it all down, as i usually do.
Then at one point he says "all of this means it is clear to me that you have an imaginative impairement"
At which point i'm thinking WTF he thinks I'm making this all up??? How the hell do i challenge this, how can he even think that after what we've just been through???? Ofc this is in the space of about 2 seconds.
Then i realised he meant an impairement of imagination, not an imaginary impairement. I had to tell him about it and he said it was one of the few times in the few hours i'd been there that i'd shown any clear body language or my facial expressions had given away my thoughts.
This doesn't happen a lot but enough that it's a problem, and of course if i try to clarify with someone the meaning of what they said, i mess it up and manage to offend them. It's one of the real "this sucks" aspects of AS that when I don't understand something due to my poor social understanding, i have to use my poor social understanding to fix the problem, and i wonder why it doesn't work!

Ah, yes, that is a real problem. But, it is really nice when the other person understands and at least tries to understand.
