though there is a difference in the male/female presentation of a.s, it is rarely mentioned in definitions of a.s.

****************so please could anyone with any recent resources add them here?
or state any substantial differences they are convinced of?- eg- the crying.

it is particually irratating, as it results in being told 'there is no such thing as a different gender presentation' + 'you cant be a.s as you're nothing like an a.s bloke i know' etc...

i am referring more to non clinical resources. eg the english national autistic society (which is generally EXCELLENT)- has nothing on female a.s, and indeed the def they give is the usual maleish one; http://www.nas.org.uk/asperger

so it would be helpful if this was mentioned- not just for friends/relatives of asd's, but for girls finding out about a.s for themselves. --it was only from reading posts here that i heard of the male female difference. i asked the NAS why they dont mention it and they said it was something they knew of.

ANYWAY!!!--- i'd really like to read some more, and thought others might like to too.

if there is enough id have a go at getting the NAS (which i do genuinly love otherwise) to change their def. otherwise it'd just be really good to have an up to date list of stuff- if there is any.... apols for lengthy post.

previous thread- and article last april.

We currently have 2 16 year olds with AS in my family. My daughter and my nephew. They have exactly the same problems. The biggest difference is that to most people my daughter appears normal, whereas they are very much aware that my nephew has difficulties, even if they don't know why.

This highlights a big difference between girls and boys with AS. Girls are much more likely to copy what they see around them in order to fit in. In my daughter's case, she was so good at it that she fooled most professionals. Only those who really knew her could spot that something wasn't quite right.

She summed it up herself recently following the sudden death of her friends mother. The girl came back to school and everyone was fussing over her, all concerned for her welbeing and getting quite upset themselves. My daughter was exactly the same. Nobody would have noticed she was different. But she said to me afterwards that she just did what everyone else was doing as she figured that was what was expected. She said she actually didn't feel anything and wasn't that interested, after all it wasn't like it was me, so why should she be bothered by it.

I'd just like to add, that my nephew started getting help when he started school, aged 5. This ability to mimic those around has resulted in my daughter not getting diagnosed until she was 16, despite my concerns being raised again and again since she was 2.
